Fifty-Eight Boxers Advance to the Quarterfinal Round

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier I moved in to the third day of competition on Wednesday at City Auditorium in Colorado Springs with all of the day’s 116 participants battling for a spot in the quarterfinal round.

The U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program enjoyed a strong morning, going undefeated in women’s flyweight and lightweight competition. Two of WCAP’s former national champions in different weight divisions have convened in the flyweight division and both recorded victories in their tournament debuts. Two-time light flyweight champion Alex Love (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won a 2-1 decision over 2015 Youth National Championships gold medalist Kristyn Juarez (Los Angeles, Calif.) in their flyweight contest. Former featherweight titlist Melissa Parker (Fort Carson, Colo.) staked her claim on her new lower division with a third round TKO over Mikaila Gutierrez (Kemp, Texas) in their preliminary meeting.

WCAP’s Rianna Rios (Colorado Springs, Colo.) extended their winning streak into another weight division in her first round bout with 2015 Youth World Championships bronze medalist Ariel Arismendez (Tolleson, Ariz.) Rios took a unanimous decision victory over Arismendez to join her teammates in the quarterfinal round.

Two-time world champion and Youth Olympic Games gold medalist Jajaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) made her elite division debut in Wednesday’s afternoon action and she made it a successful one in her match-up with Amy Hester (Ralston, Neb.). Gonzalez showed off the aggressive style that garnered her so much success in the junior and youth divisions on her way to a first round stoppage over Hester. Gonzalez’s older brother Jousce Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) put on an impressive performance of his own in the men’s lightweight division. Jousce Gonzalez took on yet another Gonzalez, Jose Gonzalez (New York, N.Y.) in his first bout of the tournament. The elder Gonzalez sibling took a TKO victory as well after dropping his opponent with a left hook in the first round of their match-up. Both of the Gonzalez siblings advance to the quarterfinals with their first round wins.

2014 USA Boxing National Champion Genaro Gamez (San Diego, Calif.) and recently crowned National Golden Gloves titlist Teofimo Lopez (Davie, Fla.) claimed preliminary round victories on Wednesday afternoon to advance in the talent-laden men’s lightweight division.

Two-time USA Boxing National Champion Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) took the ring for the first time in his welterweight division on Wednesday and he earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a unanimous decision win over David Rodriguez (Miami Gardens, Fla.).

Alday’s fellow former national team member Leshawn Rodriquez (Medford, N.Y.) scored his first win of the tournament in evening action. The two-time middleweight national champion won a second round TKO over Joshua Balbuena (Marietta, Ga.) in their first round bout to move on to the quarterfinal round.

Quarterfinal rounds will be contested at noon and 6 p.m. on Thursday at City Auditorium with all of the victors advancing to the semifinals.
