Everyone’s talking about Ahmet Patterson – but Phil Gill doesn’t know why

Five weeks after he outpointed power-puncher Dale Miles to claim a breakthrough win, Patterson meets Gill for the vacant Southern Area welterweight championship.

They square up on the ‘The Quest For Honour and Glory’ bill at the Camden Centre a week on Friday (JULY 5).

“Everyone is talking about me now,” said Patterson, who is based at the Peacock Gym.
“Dale Miles was a big puncher and he was struggling to get fights.

“Nobody wanted to fight him, they were all avoiding him. But I felt comfortable in there. I was always in control.
“That fight has made people sit up and take notice. Now they know what I can do.”
Gill says he doesn’t know what all the fuss is about.

Gill, a tough, heart-on-his-sleeve scrapper from Waltham Abbey beaten just once in 17 fights, said: “(Promoter) Mickey (Helliet) told me about Patterson and said nobody wants to fight him, but I can’t see why.
“He’s flashy, but there are definitely ways to beat him.”

Gill had been hoping for a big fight at 10 stones and admitted: “I know it’s a risk and I’m definitely the underdog. That suits me. There’s no pressure on me.”

Also on the show, London-based Dubliner Dean Byrne looks to get back in the welterweight mix after losing a desperately close points decision to world-ranked Carson Jones last year.

Byrne has inked a deal with promoter Mickey Helliet – and two more of his signings make their professional debuts on the show.

Edgware light-middleweight Tony Milch boxed for Finchley ABC alongside the likes of Dereck Chisora – and Marley Churcher has an impressive amateur pedigree.

The Reading prospect won the Junior ABAs, Four Nations gold and lost to Deion Jumah in the semi finals of the 2011 ABA championships.

Leon Senior, the Southern Area light-heavyweight champion, is also matched and Elliott Matthews plans to punish Raimonds Sniedze in their middleweight rematch.

Tickets for the show are available from 07843-636920 and
