Edner Cherry Teams-Up with Trainer, Dan Birmingham, for Philadelphia Bout, This Friday
St, Petersburg, FL (4/1/14) – Former World Title challenger, Junior Lightweight, Edner “Cherry Bomb” Cherry has teamed-up with 2-time Trainer of the Year, Dan Birmingham. Cherry has spent the last 10 weeks at Birmingham’s St. Pete gym.
“I’m so happy to be working with Dan,” said Chery after a recent workout. “I’ve learned a lot and have improved so much over the last few months.”
Another thing that is helping Cherry is his spirited sparring sessions with interim Welterweight Champion, Keith Thurman, another Birmingham protégé.
“Man, Keith is great,” said during a recent interview, referring to Thurman. “He’s been helping me a lot, too. There’s a great atmosphere at Dan’s gym and it’s been the best training camp of my career.”
Cherry (31-6-2 (17 KO’s) will be back in the ring on April 4th, in Philadelphia, when he takes on the durable Robert Osiobe.
Osiobe has never been stopped, going the distance with former IBF champion, Rances Barthelemy.
Cherry has won 8 consecutive fights, campaigning at his natural weight of 130 lbs. He has fought as high as 140 lbs against World Champions, Timothy Bradley and Paul Malignaggi.
In his last bout, Cherry stopped former title challenger, Vincente Escobedo, in 6 rounds.
Birmingham is confident and very enthusiastic about Cherry’s future. “Edner is a very disciplined and dedicated boxer,” said Birmingham. “He’s the strongest 130 pounder in the world and there’s no question that he can be a world champion by the end of this year.”
This will be Cherry’s first fight under the Peltz Boxing banner. Cherry signed a promotional deal with the Hall of Fame Matchmaker, Russell Peltz, earlier this year. His career had been sidelined, due to litigation with his former promoter over their inability to provide bouts for Cherry.
