Damien Hooper dominates Josh Webb

FAST-RISING Australian light-heavyweight Damien “Super” Hooper put on a clinic against countryman Josh Webb, before stopping him at the end of third round in Perth on Friday night (June 20).

The 2012 Olympian boxed cleverly behind a solid jab early on before making his foe eat right hands.

Webb was ranked number six in the country and had two professional titles to his name, but he couldn’t deal with Hooper’s skills and soon found himself nursing a large mouse under his left eye and a badly bleeding nose.

Bravely, Webb clambered back to his feet after Hooper had dropped him with a straight right hand during the second round, but by the third he’d had enough and retired on his stool.

The victory adds to Hooper’s growing credentials as one of the world’s best young prospects and sets him up nicely for his July 30 date with the experienced Joel Casey in Broadbeach, Queensland.

Hooper said: “I wanted to show people that I can box smartly and I’m not just an all guns blazing type of guy. I think I boxed very well, but when I caught Webb with a few shots I knew it wasn’t going to be a long night.

“Full credit to Josh, he’s a very tough and brave guy. He was bleeding pretty badly in there, but he was still trying to fight and I’ve got to take my hat off to him.

“I’d also like to thank my promoter, Ricky Hatton, for keeping me busy and getting the right fights.”
