Anthony Sims Stops Opponent in First Round and Maliek Montgomery Wins to Advance in the 2012 Youth World Championships

Lightweight Maliek Montgomery (Macon, Ga.) and light heavyweight Anthony Sims, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich.) joined bantamweight Gary Salazar (Fresno, Calif.) in the second round with opening bout victories at the 2012 Youth World Championships on Friday in Yerevan, Armenia. Sims wasted no time in his bout with Lithuania’s Edgar Liman, knocking him out in the first round of their light heavyweight bout. Flyweight Edmundo Guzman (Las Cruces, N.M.) dropped his first round bout to Indonesia’s Aldonis Suguro to eliminate him from the tournament.

Sims made an impressive first impression on the world championships scene, ending his bout in the first round with a devastating knockout to move on to a second round bout with Armenia’s Nikol Arutyunov on Monday evening.

Montgomery battled Germany’s Sahan Aybay of Germany in his first bout of the tournament and he made his international debut a successful one. After a close first round, Montgomery took control of the bout in the second, claiming a 13-9 lead with one round remaining. He built on his advantage over the final three minutes to win a 17-10 decision and a berth in the next round. Montgomery will face Croatia’s Luka Mazar on Sunday afternoon in second round action.

Guzman fell behind early in his bout with Suguro and was not able to make up his initial deficit. He faced a 7-3 disadvantage and after one round and Suguro enjoyed a 13-7 lead as the contest moved into the final three minutes. Suguro went on to win an 18-13 final decision over Guzman.

Salazar will be the lone U.S. competitor to box in Friday’s action, facing Syria’s Ali Ghosoun in the afternoon session. The U.S. team is being led by Christopher Barela (Las Cruces, N.M.), Michael Montgomery (Macon, Ga.), and Gilberto Salazar (Fresno, Calif.).

Preliminary round action will continue through December 2 with quarterfinal competition on December 3 and 4. Following the rest day, semifinal action will be contested on December 6 and the event will conclude with championship bouts on December 7.
