Amir Mansour vs Devin Vargas on April 12
DOVER, Del. — Dover Downs Hotel & Casino presents Friday Night Fights on April 12 in the Rollins Center. Fighters on the card are eager to set their intensive training into action, and with titles now on the line the excitement is ramping up. Ed Sutor, President and CEO of Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, states, “Our boxing fans should be very excited about the dual title bouts on this terrific boxing card.”
It has been announced that heavyweight champion Amir “Hardcore” Mansour, 17(13)-0, from Penns Grove, N.J., will fight for the North American Boxing Association and the World Boxing Federation Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship Titles against Devin Vargas, 18(7)-2, of Toledo, Ohio. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to fight a fighter with the background of Devin Vargas,” said Mansour. “Others are ducking me, and props to him for coming to Dover Downs Hotel & Casino where I have never lost. It will be a challenge, but I am at the top of my game and ready to beat down any heavyweight in the world.” Vargas, a two-time National Heavyweight Golden Gloves Champion, represented the U.S. as team captain for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Female champion “Queen” Ronica Jeffrey, 11(1)-0, out of Brooklyn, N.Y., is set to challenge Natasha “Nightmare” Spence, 6(5)-1-1, of Ontario, Canada, for the Women’s International Boxing Association Super Featherweight Championship Title. “I always like to maintain a degree of professionalism when I fight,” said Jeffrey. “This is the first time I really don’t like an opponent. On April 12th, I’m gonna show Natasha “Nightmare” Spence that she is nothing more than a daydream and not a nightmare.”
In Jeffrey’s appearance at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino last August, she earned the World Boxing Council Silver Super Featherweight Championship Title against a very formidable “Lethal” Lindsay Garbatt. Jeffrey also currently holds the WBU and NABF female Championship titles in her weight class, both earned in the Rollins Center at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.
Unbeaten, top welterweight prospect Dusty Harrison (13-0, 8 KOs) of Washington, D.C., is a favorite in the D.C. Metropolitan area, and at only 18 years old has already made a name for himself on the boxing circuit. “The boxing events at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino are major promotions, and that is a terrific venue,” stated Harrison. “I am preparing for the challenge on April 12, and it’s great that hundreds of my fans from the D.C. area will be there supporting me.” Harrison is set to challenge Jonathan Garcia, 3(1)-4, of Aguada, Puerto Rico.
Undefeated featherweight, Omar “Super O” Douglas, 6(4)-0, of Wilmington, Del., is a former amateur star who will fight for his seventh time at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in a six round battle against Daniel “Super Sweet” Mitchell, 5(2)-2-1, of Pittsburgh, Pa. “I’ve never jumped out of training camp,” said Douglas. “It’s been an ongoing process with lots of sparring, getting other guys ready for big fights. Tonight, I’m going to work hard, use my boxing skills and open up my opponent. As soon as I open him up, I will try my best to get him out of there.”
Dover’s own super middleweight, John “Church Boy” Bowman, 5-0-1, is ready to go to battle against Stanley Harvey, 1(1)-4, of Norfolk, Va. “I’m excited and we’re having a good camp,” said Bowman. “I’m looking forward to a good fight when the night comes, and hope that everyone enjoys seeing Church Boy perform at a higher level.”
Another Dover favorite, Lamont “Problem Solver” Singletary, 4(2)-0, is poised to add another win to his record over Tracey Johnson, 1-1-2, of Atlanta, Ga. “I’m excited about fighting back home,” said Singletary. “Training has been very good. I’ve been putting very intense work in. I’m looking forward to my home state coming out and giving me big support and see what I’ve learned and how I’ve matured as a boxer. It’s going to be an incredible, good night for me. Be expecting a good fight.”
Also on the undercard is lightweight Joey Tiberi, 8(5)-1, of Newark, Del. Tiberi’s opponent has not yet been announced.
