WBC Orders Beyer to fight Lucas again

21.05 - The World Boxing Council (WBC) has advised InterBox with their decision concerning a re-match for the World Title in the Super Middleweight (division) between the Champion of Germany Markus Beyer and the number one contender of Quebec Eric Lucas. On April 5th Eric Lucas lost his title with a controversial split decision (116-113, 116-113, 114-115). Eric Lucas and his promoter InterBox considered this as a wrongful decision and they demanded a re-match as soon as possible.

The Board of Governors of the WBC now confirms the following:

The Champion Markus Beyer has the right to one optional title defense, but the winner of this bout will confront Eric Lucas in a obligatory title defense in the following bout.

A definite date was not determined for the optional defense of Markus Beyer, but his promoter Sauerland Event has already made a request to the WBC for the month of August.

The WBC will determine right after this bout a limited period for the confrontation against Eric Lucas.

The two parties, InterBox and Sauerland Events may begin negotiations on the amount and the purse split and on the place of the bout. Once the date for the obligatory defence is determined, the WBC will grant the two parties a limited period of time to agree, after which the bout will be put up for bid by the promoters.

The General Secretary of the WBC, Mr. Mario Latraverse is pleased with the decision that was rendered by his organization “The Board of Governors understood the importance of this bout for Canada”, declared Mr. Latraverse. “I am very happy that the Governors agreed with the recommendations of the committee”.
