Boy beater Denise Moses headed to boxing’s promised land

Jeff Fraza headlines “Rumble Under the Stars” Friday night at Haverhill Stadium

23.07 – She walked into the Lawrence Boxing Club nearly two years ago with a reputation as the toughest girl in the city. Friday (July 25) night Denise Moses makes her professional boxing debut on the undercard of “Rumble Under the Stars,” presented by Pendarvis Boxing Promotions at Haverhill Stadium. Haverhill High School’s gymnasium will be the site in case of inclement weather.

Hometown hero Jeff “Hellraza” Fraza (13-2, 7 KOs), the reigning New England Light Welterweight Champion, headlines “Rumble Under the Stars” in the eight-round, non-title main event Friday night against Mark Scott (4-4-1, 3 KOs), of Cincinnati (OH).

Doug Pendarvis is promoting “Rumble Under the Stars,” in association with Hampton Inn of Lawrence, World Gym of Haverhill and Frugal McDoogal’s. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Haverhill High School athletic program.

Moses, 18, is a senior at Lawrence High School, where she briefly played football as a quarterback. The 5-3 ½, 118-pounder was 5-0 as an amateur. She captured the New England Golden Gloves novice title this year.

“She’s very strong and athletic,” her trainer Mel Peabody said. “One of the boys who trained at the Lawrence Boxing Club came in one night and told us how he watched a girl beat up a boy in a fight. I told him to get her in the gym. She’s had a lot of street fights; Denise is a boy beater.”

Denise faces Kim Jeffrey (0-1), of Cincinnati (OH), is a four-round featherweight match. “I’m excited about fighting in front of my family and friends,” Denise said. “Some day I’d love to be a world champion, but right now I’m fighting because it’s fun.”

Veteran cruiserweight Roy “House of” Payne (15-12-4, 6 KOs), of Worcester, has been added to the card in the six-round co-feature against Ron Preston, of Pittsburgh (PA).

The “Rumble Under the Stars” undercard also finds Lawrence heavyweight Jose Colon, Springfield light heavyweight Sal Zabian (1-1, 1 KO), and junior welterweight Alex Infante (1-0), of Haverhill.
