DaVarryl Williamson KO’s Corey ‘T-Rex’ Sanders on ESPN2’s ‘Friday Night Fights’

27.07 - Chester, WV: DaVarryl ‘Touch of Sleep’ Williamson took his biggest and toughest step to date, with a 5th round KO over the giant Corey ‘T-Rex’ Sanders on ‘ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights’.

Williamson (17-1, 16KO) replaces Sanders’ original opponent, Derek Bryant, who removed himself from the fight for undisclosed reasons. The 6’4", 211lb Williamson was coming off of an impressive 3rd round TKO over the very durable Dale Crowe on May 26, 2002 and proved that he belonged in the heavyweight division with this.

The 6’6", 313lbs Sanders (23-7, 15KO), was carrying personal best seven fight win streak into the ring. For a brief moment, it looked like the diminutive Williamson may have bitten off more than he could chew. Giving away 102lbs to Sanders, Williamson was caught late in the 3rd round by a big left hook by Sanders that sent Williamson back into the ropes and drew a standing 8-count.

Williamson was able to rally himself in the 4th round, fending off an early attack by Sanders, to take the last minutes of the round. In the 5th, an obviously tired ‘T-Rex’ found himself leaning on the ropes, and taking a beating from the ‘Touch of Sleep’.

A steady onslaught by Williamson forced the referee to issue a standing 8-count, and shortly after Sanders was caught by a huge right, a good left and then the overhand right that sent Sanders to the mat for good.

The ‘Touch of Sleep’ extended his winning streak to 14 consecutive wins, the last 12 ending by KO. Williamson is arguably the busiest fighter in the Heavyweight division, with wins in January, March, April, May and now in July.

The 6’6", 290lbs Sanders (23-6, 15KO), not only carries an appropriate moniker, but also a personal best seven fight win streak into the ring. The 33-year-old Williamson was recently recognized by both the North American Boxing Association (#9) and the North American Boxing Organization (#13). These regional rankings are considered the prologue to a World Ranking, a position in which the winner of this bout could find themselves in next month’s ratings.

The ESPN2 broadcast will air Friday, July 26, 2002 from 9-11 p.m. (EST)

Touch of Sleep Climbing the Ladder: DaVarryl Williamson moves into the #9 position of the North American Boxing Association

14.07 - Denver, CO: DaVarryl ‘Touch of Sleep’ Williamson coming off of a third round TKO over the usually durable Dale Crowe, is beginning to gain the recognition inside boxing circles that he so deserves. The North American Boxing Association (NABA) released their July 2002 rankings, slotting Williamson in the #9 position.

Winning an NABA title is meant to symbolize a boxer’s graduation from the regional ranks and introduce him to the world stage. The NABA is affiliated with the World Boxing Association (WBA), where current WBA Champion John Ruiz will defend his title against undefeated Kirk Johnson on July 27, 2002.

Williamson (16-1, 15KO) turned pro in June 2000 and already has established himself as a threat to any fighter who comes unprepared. With a dangerous right hand, Williamson has yet to extend himself beyond the 5th round, and 15 of his 17 opponents have tasted canvas.

The ‘Touch of Sleep’ looks to get back into the ring shortly, but in the meantime is very excited about his new ranking and feels that the respect of fighters, promoters, and fans is earned more and more with every fight.

Williamson, a former 10-time national champion has been on Cedric Kushner Promotions fast-track this year, already fighting in January, March, April and now in May. The ‘Touch of Sleep’ has certainly lived up to his nickname, as his last 11 opponents have gone down by KO. Look for bigger and better things from this up and comer before the year is out.
