Hatton vs Smith: British Board of Control to meet on Nov 5

Dave O'Swan

15.10 - The British boxing board of control are due to meet in London on November 5th for a special meeting to decide on the action needed to be taken after the Ricky Hatton versus Stephy Smith fight ended in chaos.

Smith's father and trainer - Darkie, took the law into his own hands by leaping into the ring at the Manchester Evening News Arena, pushing the referee Mickey Vann in the process - before the stunned official disqualified the equally amazed Smith junior.

Smith was incensed about Hatton's use of his elbows in the second round, and was concerned that Vann had not spotted it when blood gushed from his son's temple.

It is believed the Board, which had withheld Smith's £70,000 for fighting Hatton, will probably deduct ten per cent of the challenger's purse- the amount Darkie would have earned as his son's trainer.

Things don't look to rosie for the Smith's - especially as promoter Frank Warren has issued a compliant to the BBBC , claiming his role as promoter was damaged by the incident which scarred Hatton's WBU light - welterweight title defence.

Board General Secretary Simon Block said " we were going to consider the disbursal of Stephen Smith's purse and the conduct of Darkie Smith - separately." He went on to add " as a result of a complaint by Frank Warren we cannot deal with the matter expeditiously."

The board of control have made it clear that this type of incident will not be tolerated , they will not look favourably on 57-year-old Darkie's behaviour and a ban from boxing seems inevitable. Sadly both Father and son have indicated they are to quit the sport and it seems the Smith's may have to endure another unhappy ending.
