An all out Scandinavian boxing Feast in Helsinki on Saturday night

By Teddy Stenmark

13.02 - There will be an action packed event in Helsinki, Finland on the 15th of February as the multi-Scandinavian boxing stable, Modern Sports & Events get their first card of 2003 off the ground. Biggest focus of course on the two main events which features Swede Paolo Roberto (welterweight) and Norwegian Thomas Hansvoll (cruiserweight). Both men take part in WBO intercontinental title fights. Roberto has been pinned in with American Wayne Martel (23-1-0) that holds 10 round point victories over faded stars, Livingstone Bramble and Meldrick Taylor.

Hansvoll gets an easier task as he squares off with practically unknown 24- year old Hungarian, Gabor Halasz (13-5). The Hungarian challenger that has been called in on a short notice has never been past the six round distance and it would be considered a miracle if he were to cause an upset against the Norwegian.

Local Finns, Kai Kauramäki (9-3-0) and Amin Asikainen tangle in a sizzling hot Finnish middleweight title fight over 10 rounds. Probably one of the best match ups of the card! Keep an eye out for that one. Quality Pole Thomas Adamek (21-0) and Andrei Kiarsten (12-1) of Estonia shoot it out over eight rounds in a Non-Scandinavian affair at light heavyweight. Undefeated Danish heavyweight, Thomas Sörensen (8-0) gets a vastly experienced yank on his hands as gloves up to face Rodney McSwain (8-23-1) in a scheduled six round bout.

Hard-hitting Finn Allan Grönfors (7-0) will taste Hungarian experience as he is in with Hungarian trial horse Zoltan Berez in a cruiserweight match over six rounds. Junior welterweight Dane, Sören Engelbrecht (7-0) has a Spaniard to deal with, Mohammed El Idrissi (4-2-1) while his stable mate at middleweight, Terje Arildsen will have to face one of the local boys, Markus Huhtala (2-1-0). One of Finland's biggest prospects for the future, lightweight Juho Tolppola is also on the program and faces Spaniard Oscar Blanco over four rounds.

In addition to him we get the pleasure to enjoy the skills of Norwegian bantamweight-ace Reidar Walstad (3-0-1). Walstad, a former top class-amateur is in with Blanco's countryman, Pedro Castanon (1-2-0). The card in Helsinki will be aired live on the Scandinavian Pay-channel TV1000 while the two main event fights will be shown later in an edited version on the free Commercial channels TV3 Norway and TV3 Sweden. It's definitely a card that could please all Nordic fans and seems to be a sure bet for an entertaining night of boxing!
