Boxing

From the Scandinavian fight scene

By Teddy Stenmark

07.11 - Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported recently that professional boxers will be allowed to compete at the Olympics from the 1st of January 2003. This was decided at the AIBA World Congress held in Cairo just recently. The idea of letting the pro-boxers take part in major amateur tournaments has been moved forward by Bjorn Rosengren, president of the Swedish Amateur Boxing Federation. Question is which fighters wants to return to amateur rules having enjoyed the rules of the professional section of our sport. Time will tell I guess!

Danish heavyweight favourite Brian Nielsen has, apparently, a hard time healing the right hand that he has had an operation on and is forced to "glove-less" training, No sparring, No heavy bag-punching. Crappy news to hear, but the former Tyson opponent keeps himself in good shape through roadwork and some weightlifting. Nielsen's comeback is estimated to sometime next year if everything goes the way it should.

The Modern Sports & Events fighters have packed up their training camp at the Sport-Centre, Boson in Stockholm and I chatted with undefeated (12-0) Norwegian lightweight Geir-Inge Jorgensen a few days ago. He told me that training is going very well and that we should expect a good showing from him. He has had five weeks of tough sparring in Spain and is now making the final Preparations sparring with Swedish colleague Thomas Jansson 19-2-0. Joining Geir-Inge soon at the training camp is his countryman bantamweight prospect Reidar Walstad 2-0-1, the stylish former amateur star has been preparing in London with quality sparring-partners, and is as of right now having a week in Trondheim sparring with Swede Frankie De Milo. It looks like we will se MSE-fighters in excellent shape come November 16th.

Amazingly, track and field star Pal Arne Fagernes (Javelin) is looking good sparring with Finnish heavyweight Jukka Järvinen. The charismatic athlete who was denied a boxing license in Denmark recently because of the fact that he lacked any amateur experience will now make his pro-debut in Mariehamn, Finland after all. In my opinion that is circus-behaviour from the Scandinavian stable just to attract viewers (Modern Sports & Events is tied to Nordic pay TV-channel TV1000), it was right do deny Fagernes a license in Denmark. He shouldn't be allowed to step in with real pro-boxers without any amateur experience what so ever! I know that a lot of Norwegian fans get angry with me now for writing this, but hey, that is my opinion!

Retired Former European light heavyweight champion Ole Klemetsen of Norway has a book out right now that covers his career from the early amateur days right up that devastating loss to countryman Thomas Hansvoll. The book is called "Lukkoye (sandman) The story of Ole Klemetsen, and too bad you non-Scandinavian fight-fans, it's only in Norwegian. But if you still want it, you can purchase it on www.danish-boxing.dk.

Rudy Markussen, who challenges Sven Ottke in Nürnberg, Germany on the 16th of November has apparently been forced to agree to three fights in Germany should he be successful against the champion. Team Palle wasn't very pleased with that deal but made an exception since Markussen wanted the opportunity to fight Ottke so badly.

It's just hours away from the World title fight (IBF) in lightweight for Dennis Holbaek now and the slick Dane has had good, really good preparations in Philadelphia "The city of brotherly love" so good in fact that he aims to carry the city flag in with him (into the ring) together with the Danish one come Saturday. I am crossing my fingers for Dennis that he will do well despite his long layoff prior to this one. Go get him Dennis!

Until next time don't miss a single punch!
