DIEGO CORRALES SIGNS
WITH GARY SHAW PRODUCTIONS
11.01 - DIEGO CORRALES IS BACK AND GARY SHAW PRODUCTIONS
HAS HIM!!!
Gary Shaw announced today, the signing of former
the IBF jr. lightweight champion, who has won 33 of
34 bouts, to a promotional contract.
"I am ecstatic to have Diego onboard the GSP
team," said Shaw. "Diego's manager, James
Prince, and I agree that Diego has the talent to win
world titles as a lightweight, junior welterweight,
welterweight and even jr. middleweight. His potential
is limitless. Mark my words, in 10 years when the
names of great multi-division world champions like
Leonard, Hearns and Duran are being discussed, Diego's
name will also be included."
Corrales, 33-1 (27 KOs), from Sacramento, CA, breaks
a two-year hiatus from the ring, in his jr. welterweight
debut, Saturday, January 25, at Bally's Atlantic City
Hotel and Casino. His fight, scheduled for 10 rounds,
will be televised nationally on SHOWTIME Championship
Boxing, 10 P.M. EST / 10 P.M. PST, as part of a two-fight
jr. welterwight extravaganza also featuring former
WBA super lightweight Sharmba Mitchell in a 12-round
IBF elimination bout against Argentine fireball Carlos
Vilches, for the vacant No.2 jr. welterweight contender
position. The card is a promotion of Gary Shaw Productions,
LLC., in association with Budweiser.
The 6'1 Corrales, 25, is a boxing fan's type of
fighter and an opponent's worst nightmare. He is the
complete package, a hard puncher who throws vicious,
accurate punches from all angles. Despite starving
himself to make the 130-pound super featherweight
limit, Corrales was still capable of explosive endings
on a consistent basis as his victory by knockout ratio
will attest -- 82%! Just imagine the force behind
his punches at lightweight and higher!
Corrales made the most of his mandatory challenge
against undefeated IBF jr. lightweight champion Robert
Garcia, dethroning the champion via a seventh-round
TKO in their slugfest, October 23, 1999. Corrales
successfully defended his title three times during
the next 12 months, with third round knockouts of
Angel Manfredy and Derrick Gainer and a 12-round unanimous
decision over John Brown. After vacating the title
in anticipation of moving up in weight, Corrales returned
to the 130 pound division to challenge WBC super featherweight
champion Floyd Mayweather, January 20, 2001. The rigors
of making a weight at which he was no longer comfortable
left Corrales drained for the fight and he lost by
TKO in the 10th round.
Corrales, who has overcome personal problems over
the past few years, returns with a new team, which
includes Las Vegas-based trainer Kenny Adams, manager
James Prince, and a new bride (he got married New
Year's Eve).
"I feel very good about everything," said
Corrales from his training camp in Las Vegas, NV.
"I am looking forward to having an excellent
year. Everything in my life is positive these days."
