Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Brings Spectacular Fights To Sam’s Town February 7 For ESPN2 Live Broadcast

17.01 – Sugar Ray Leonard, Chairman of Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing, is thrilled to be returning to Las Vegas --- for the first time as a boxing promoter. “Las Vegas was the place where I experienced some of the greatest moments of my life. I am thrilled to be coming back to Las Vegas to bring an evening of exciting, entertaining and competitive fights to Sam’s Town on Friday, February 7. It will be nostalgic and kind of strange for me to be outside the ring in Las Vegas, but I’m really looking forward to it,” said Leonard. The fights will be televised nationally as part of ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights series and Leonard will be on hand meeting fans and signing autographs.

The Main Event features a 10 round war between two of the world’s top rated Jr. Welterweights. Omar Weis (35-4-3, 16 KO) of Los Angeles, WBC #6, IBF #10 and WBO #11, squares off against 2001’s Fight of the Year winner and the IBF’s #5 ranked Emanuel Augustus (formerly known as Emanuel Burton) (27-19-5, 14 KO) of Miami. Augustus scored a major win on July 19, 2002 when he knocked out IBF#4 Wilfredo Vilches (whose upcoming bout is on Showtime World Championship Boxing) in an 8th round upset, televised on ESPN2. Weis is a tremendously popular blood and guts warrior from Argentina who last year beat Hector Camacho Jr. and lost a controversial decision to former world champion Zab Judah on July 13, 2002. The winner of this match is well positioned to go to the top of the IBF rankings and find himself battling for the coveted world title.

The 10 round Co-Main Event features two top Welterweight prospects, Angelo Dundee protégé David Estrada (14-0, 8 KO) of Miami and Armando Velardez (14-1, 7 KO) of San Bernardino, CA. Both fighters have great crowd-pleasing styles --- this fight promises to be an all out war. Velardez is the brother of top rated featherweight Bobby Boy Velardez. This fight marks the first time Angelo Dundee and Sugar Ray Leonard will be reunited professionally since Leonard entered the promotional business almost two years ago.

In a great undercard fight, two unbeaten prospects meet in an 8 round special attraction. Erik Rodriguez (10-0-1, 6 KO) of Lytle, TX and Juan Ruiz (13-0, 5 KO) of Santa Clarita, CA put their unblemished records on the line in this Jr. Featherweight battle. Other rising stars competing in this evening’s event include Bernard Dunne (3-0, 3 KO) of Los Angeles, Ireland’s top prospect whose first three professional fights, all knockouts, have been seen on national television in the U.S. as well as 2002 National Golden Gloves champion Allan Green (2-0, 2 KO) of Tulsa, OK. In addition, Las Vegas attraction Brandon Mitchem (20-4-1, 8 KO) will be part of what promises to be a sensational night of boxing.

Ticket prices range from $35.00 to $125.00 and can be purchased through Sam's Town Casino or Tickets.com
