“SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION” TAKES ITS ACT TO LAS VEGAS

17.06 - Press Release - The popular boxing series “ShoBox: The New Generation” will return to Las Vegas on Thursday, June 19, when undefeated junior welterweight Jose Armando Santa Cruz battles Miguel Angel Torrecillas at the Cannery Hotel & Casino. In the co-feature, Robert Kamya will take on World Boxing Council (WBC) Latin Americas Super Welterweight Champion Shawn Garnett in a non-title, junior middleweight match. SHOWTIME will televise the scheduled eight-round bouts, presented by Sterling Promotions Inc. and Frank Warren, at 11 p.m. ET/PT. The telecast represents the 32nd in a series of “ShoBox” telecasts that began on July 21, 2001.

Santa Cruz (13-0, 6 KOs), of Lincoln Heights, Calif., will make his second Las Vegas appearance. In his initial Sin City outing, the rising contender scored a second-round TKO over Jaime Ocegueda on Aug. 24, 2002. Santa Cruz, a Southern California native, has fought nine of his 13 career fights in his home state. Though most of his bouts have been close to home, Santa Cruz made his professional debut at age 19 in Tokyo, Japan, on June 11, 2000, and scored a first-round knockout over Penpak Chokchai. The undefeated boxer-puncher has won each of his three 2003 contests, including consecutive early-round knockouts in his past two outings. Following a second-round KO over Alfonso Garcia on May 28, 2003, Santa Cruz returned to the ring five days later to floor Leobardo Roman in the opening round.

Torrecillas (13-3, 6 KOs), of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, made his professional debut one week after his 20th birthday and earned a four-round decision over Juan Arano on Feb. 23, 1996. After fighting 11 times during the first three years of his career, Torrecillas stepped away from boxing for nearly three years (November 1998 – September 2001). Since his return on Oct. 5, 2001, Torrecillas has won five consecutive bouts, including a four-round unanimous decision on May 3, 2003, over Mark Burse.

Kamya (12-2, 4 KOs), of West Palm Beach, by way of Kampala, Uganda, has fought just five times since the end of 1999. After fighting twice in 2000, the tough Ugandan has entered the ring only once each in the past three years. Armed with impressive skills, the physically strong Kamya has served as a sparring partner for former International Boxing Federation (IBF) 140-pound champion Zab Judah. After opening his pro career with 10 consecutive victories, Kamya suffered his first defeat when Jose Flores stopped him in the seventh round on Aug. 26, 2000, for the North American Boxing Association (NABA) 154-pound crown. In his lone 2003 appearance, Kamya registered a six-round decision over Fontaine Cabell on May 18 in Bronx, N.Y.

Garnett (9-1-1, 2 KOs) of Georgetown, Guyana, comes from a fighting family. His father was an amateur boxer and his first cousin is World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Lightweight Champion Vivian Harris. Quick and elusive with deceptive punching power, Garnett turned pro at age 24 on Nov. 3, 1998. Since dropping his initial outing, Garnett has gone unbeaten in his last 10 contests, including a fifth-round TKO over Andrey Tsurkan for the vacant New York State 154-pound crown on Dec. 11, 2002. Following a 15-month layoff, Garnett captured the WBC Latin Americas crown in his most recent outing by registering a 12-round decision over top contender Epifanio Mendoza on March 29, 2003.

“ShoBox: The New Generation” features up-and-coming prospects determined to make a mark and eventually fight for a chance at a world title. The best of the new generation of hungry, young boxers will have an opportunity to showcase their talent and heart as they battle each other in competitive fights in front of a national television audience. “ShoBox: The New Generation” is pure, basic boxing, reminiscent of the golden days of the sport.

SHOWTIME televises “ShoBox: The New Generation” at 11 p.m. ET/PT on Thursdays every other week.

Nick Charles will call the action from ringside, with Steve Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producers of the telecast are Jay Larkin and Gordon Hall, with Richard Gaughan producing.
