Al Bernstein Joins Showtime

07.05 – SHOWTIME has signed one of the most respected and recognizable voices in boxing, Al Bernstein, to work as ringside analyst for its SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecasts, Jay Larkin, Senior Vice President, Showtime Sports & Events Programming, announced today.

“Al is one of the most credible and experienced personalities in boxing,” Larkin said. “It is an industry coup having him join Steve Albert, Bobby Czyz, Nick Charles, Steve Farhood and Jim Gray as a member of our family of SHOWTIME boxing commentators."

The longtime voice of ESPN boxing, Bernstein’s first assignment alongside blow-by-blow announcer, Steve Albert will be May 17 in Reno, Nev., when former world champion Sharmba Mitchell battles Ben Tackie (10:15 p.m. ET/PT) on SHOWTIME.

The versatile, award-winning Bernstein has played a role in virtually every major fight for more than 20 years. In 1990, he was the only sportscaster in Sport Magazine’s “Best 100 in Sports.” He also has achieved success in television reporting on other sports, as well as making a mark for himself on radio, and as a live stage performer and recording artist.

An accomplished writer and author, Bernstein wrote “Boxing For Beginners,” an instructions-historical book on boxing in 1980. Before that he was a featured writer for Ring Magazine and Boxing Illustrated. From 1974-79, Bernstein was managing editor of Lerner Newspapers in Chicago. During that time, he won the Chicago Newspaper Guild’s award for best news story – an investigation into illegal land deals by suburban officials.

Bernstein, who lives in Henderson, Nev., also is an expert equestrian and has participated in a number of rodeos as both a participant and grand marshal. He also serves on the board of directors and is a spokesman for the AnyBody Can Foundation. The San Diego, Calif.-based organization, founded by legendary boxing great Archie Moore, helps young men and women in athletics and academics.
