Boxing’s Baddest: The Fans Speak! Issue 8

Mike Samuels

19.08 - This week’s issue is filled with remarks on Oscar De la Hoya’s career and status, as well as some views concerning the Ukrainian giants themselves. So get to reading. I promise it’ll last more than thirty seconds, unlike Michael Moorer.

I am sorry, I just had to respond to this week's "Boxing's Baddest." on eastsideboxing.com.

WHO in their right mind would say that Mike Tyson is "...still about as good as the Klitschkos..."

That would include WLADIMIR Klitschko, and that is a fight that would end up
with Tyson in traction.  His movement just isn't there anymore.  Tyson would never be able to get away from Wladimir, who is not only faster, and has those long arms, but who hits as hard (or harder).  Tyson's past trainer, Tommy Brooks, even remarked that Wladimir's hands are FASTER now than Tyson's were, and he would not like to see this fight take place because he thinks Mike has already taken enough beatings in hi career!

I sit back and shake my head.  All the evidence is there on video.  Watch a few of his fights and I cannot see how anyone can pick anyone over Wladimir Klitschko.  The guy is a monster.

The same questions went through my head when I read that. But I can’t sound off on anyone ‘cuz I must always show respect towards those who drop me their views. Unless they throw it down, then I gotta break em’ off something. Tyson can’t be Klitschko. Maybe an 88’ Tyson, but that’s beside the point. Everything you said I have to agree with – skill, speed, power, fight activity rate – and I hope that Tyson takes a few easy fights to make some extra cash (even though he’s not as broke as the media thinks), and then bows out of the fight game. We’ll have to see though.

You really blasted the x in your article but I as a true fan of the X and boxing have the come to his defense. First of all he's has a reign of 9 years at one weight he's fought all comers including Antwan Echols twice in one year in which the governing bodies mandated so let's face it the governing bodies and the rest of the establishment never want the X to excel to national prominence because he's not what you call marketable he couldn't sell a moon pie in the deep south but he can tell like it is and the bothers the powers because Echols was a henchman to take him out stop his run the break the record he even tried to break his shoulder to get the bout on points, Trinidad was supposed to beat him to set up a mega-millions mismatch with Roy Jones. He deserves a break a big payday.

Hopkins hasn’t always gotten the respect he deserves, but he started to get the props he’s been longing when he defeated Tito last year. Since then he has done nothing but cry, bitch, moan, and whine about everyone and everything. He feels that everyone is out to blast him or screw him, and I personally think he needs to swallow some of that Philly pride and box. He can talk for hours about nothing and the guy could sell snow to someone in the Artic, I swear. I love his personally and even though most of the public doesn’t, he has already crossed over and will now be given the respect as an all-time great no matter who wants to listen to him. The ball is in his court and he knows it. And right now he’s stalling and making choices that are going to hurt him in the long run. It doesn’t matter to X, though. He’s not changing for anyone, and that’s that. I just hope he gets in the ring soon and doesn’t end up living in the past with his win over Tito, much like RJJ has been since he beat X and Toney to get proper recognition.

Geez guy, learn how to spell and speak proper English. Your attempts at being cute by speaking in a crude manner miss the mark. I can see why you get the email you say you receive, You need to read your own stuff or have someone objective read it for you.

I tried to find the topic of your article, but it seemed to just be message board type slamming of people you did not agree with. Which is definitely more appropriate for a message board than the forum in which you presented it.

First, for someone who questions my knowledge on the English language, I sure had to edit the crap out of your post. It’s all good though, because I’m not here to care whether or not you can spell or read. Just as long as you give me your view and I respond to it, that’s all that really matters.

Secondly, there is nothing wrong with my piece. I agree that it isn’t a straight news piece, but more of a straight shot of venting rage. I tend to mix my styles up so I don’t get repetitive and boring. It’s not a response to message board freaks but rather the general public and other writers who have been blasting us all with hate towards the Golden Boy without very much reason. That’s all. If you don’t feel it, no big deal. The bottom line is: There’s a point to the article. You obviously just weren’t looking in the right place.

Mike Samules how are you doing? I just thought Id send you this short note telling you what I thought after reading your write up on Oscar being a chicken. First off I don't think anyone who steps into the ring are a chicken or scared or anything like that. These guys go through a lot when they get into the ring. I have been in one and not as a pro but never the less I got to no what it felt like. I think all that started with polo DeLaHoya before the Trinidad fight by Felix than when he called Oscar that before the fight days before. Than when Oscar ran in the last few rounds because he was tired which caused him to lose by the way didn't help. Fans started saying it because Oscar wouldn't fight and it’s true for the last few rounds Oscar stopped fighting after fighting such a great fight he was too tired. But that’s where it really started. A lot of fans have turned their backs on Oscar for different reasons that I have heard and there not all bone head reasons. I myself use to be a DeLaHoya fan but Im not anymore but it isn't due to dumb reasons at least the way I feel about it. My reasons were when he changed his way of fighting I don't like the way he fights under Floyd Mayweather in fact I don't even think Oscar fights as well as he did before he made that change. I thought he fought much better under Roberto Alcazar to be honest. And Oscar also got me a bit sad when he blamed Alcazar for his loss to Shane Mosley and I just think that was wrong. Alcazar had been with him since he started and really got Oscar where he did. Even though I no Oscar has Alcazar working in the office now I still think it was wrong to blame him he can't fight his fight for Oscar he can just train him the rest is on the golden boy. I have noticed that a lot of people have moved over to the Vargas side you can see it now way more than you ever could before. But I just wanted to let you no my reasons and when I hear writers saying the same things they always give the reasons you used. Im sure there are a lot of fans that did move for the same reasons I did I no because I no some beside myself and were just boxing fans not haters. I do have to say that I do like the style and way Vargas fights right now and always have as well as Oscars when he was with Alcazar. His style changed a lot and it to me just doesn't fit Oscar’s way, but again that’s just my opinion. I just wish a writer would give decent reasons why some fans have pulled away from Oscar’s way of fighting for our reasons. I never hear anyone say these reasons why some fans don't like Oscar’s way of fighting anymore. Just the reasons of the people that make things personal. I guess in ways you did say it like it is so I have to say it was a good write up.

Thanks,
Rick! ! !

Your reasons are EXACTLY what I was trying to generate, Rick. Thanks for such a delightful read. The person attacks on De la Hoya can be used, but personal lives and fighting in the ring are two separate issues. If you hate a guy because of how talks or looks, or because he runs his mouth, that’s fine. But most of these so-called "fans" (gotta love boxing fans, I tell ya) will hate someone and then bash their credentials in the ring in the same breath. It’s when people dig so deep to find an excuse that really bugs me, and I feel it’s bad for the sport. I’ve seen it happen with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (after he beat Corrales everyone blamed the weight of Diego, please) and it’s been going on with De la Hoya for the longest time. The issue of Oscar and his antics when he loses I can agree on. The guy doesn’t give enough props to the opponent. I can see his case for Tito because I had it 7-5, De la Hoya and could have lived with a draw. But Tito getting that win was whack. It’s boxing though and you gotta take the good in with the bad. Mosley out hustled him in the end and that’s that. The blaming of his trainer is just an act of frustration and I hope that if he doesn’t get it done against Vargas, that he shows more class than he has in the past.

His style changed mostly because the two losses to Tito and Mosley (which he feels he won) are still eating at him. He feels that he did enough to win those fights and since he didn’t get the calls, he’s changed things up (and trainers). Floyd Sr. is an EXCELLENT trainer. I had the opportunity to meet him a few years back and watch him work with his son down here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He knows his boxing and I think he can do Oscar a lot of good. But when it comes down to it, Oscar has to get over his defeats and move on.

Perhaps a win over Vargas will give him the much-needed confidence he craves. He’s going to need to bring his best boxing ever, though. Vargas is a tough cat who is stronger and natural at 154. So no matter what, this fight will be sensational.
