Ex-WBC Champ Tunacao KO´s Russian in 4!

By Dennis Principe

27.07 - CEBU CITY, Philippines – Former WBC Flyweight champion Malcolm “Eagle Eye” Tuñacao proved that he deserves another crack at the world title when he stopped Russian superflyweight champion Kakhar Sabitov in the fourth round at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel in this city.

Currently ranked #6 by the WBC in the 115-lb division, Tuñacao immediately buckled down to work and wasted no time in testing his vaunted combinations and stinging jabs which rocked and shocked his opponent early in the contest.

Tuñacao (13W-1L-2D, 9KO’s) never gave his opponent breathing room until a cracking right straight sent Sabitov sprawling in the canvass and ended the Russian’s tough but fruitless night, 2:26 of the fourth round. Tuñacao will now focus in winning his second world title in two divisions, possibly early next year against reigning WBC champion Masamori Tokuyama of Japan or fellow-Filipino and former champion Gerry Peñalosa. Tokuyama is slated to defend the crown against Peñalosa this coming November 8.

PHILIPPINE FUTURE STARS IN IMPRESSIVE WINS!

WBC #10 and IBF #7 Wendyl Janiola retained his Philippine junior Flyweight title by giving top
contender Bert Batawang a neat boxing lesson and eventually winning the fight via a 12-round unanimous decision verdict. Janiola (12W-0L, 5 KO’s), who zoomed his way in the world rankings by outpointing former WBC/IBF lightflyweight champion Saman Sorjaturong of Thailand last April impressed the crowd with his systematic combinations and ring savvy. The official score was 120-110, 119-109, 116-112.

Meanwhile, WBC #5 miniflyweight contender Eriberto “Yukka” Gejon remained undefeated by thrashing Armand Dela Cruz over 10-rounds. Gejon had a hard time in adjusting to the southpaw style of his opponent but left no doubt in claiming his 13th straight victory.

In another Philippine title match, Philippine bantamweight champion Jimrex Jaca claimed his second local crown by knocking out RP Superbantamweight champion Dino Olivetti in the second round. A strong left straight hit Olivetti’s jaw and sent him to dreamland and failed to beat the count. Jaca is now 16-0 with 9 KO’s.
