WBC #3 Suico fights in Japan

By Dennis Principe

22.04 - REIGNING Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) superfeatherweight champion Randy Suico will try to solidify his bid for shot at a world crown when he engages in a tough non-title bout on June 21 in Tokyo, Japan.

The 22-year old Suico, currently rated #3 in the prestigious World Boxing Council (WBC) rankings, is set to face ex-OPBF interim champion Kazunori Fujita of Japan in a 10-round battle.

Since turning pro in 1997, the 24-year old Fujita won his first 10 fights until he suffered his first loss to Filipino pug Tiger Ari for the OPBF crown on February 20, 2000.

The now-retired Ari temporarily relinquished the crown due to an eye ailment, paving the way for Fujita to win the interim title by decisioning Korean Kang-Il Cho last November 2000.

After almost a year of crowning himself interim champion, Fujita lost the title by 2nd round TKO to Ari in Okayama, Japan.

Fujita (16-3, 9 KO’s) vied for the Japanese title but lost by a 12-round unanimous decision to Nobuhito Honmo last January in Tokyo.

Two days ago, Fujita scored a 10-round majority decision win over compatriot Koji Narita in Kurashiki, Japan.

The undefeated Suico (19-0, 17 KO’s) is coming off a lackluster first title defense of the Oriental crown by stopping brawny Indonesian Timbul Hutagalung in the 5th round last March 29 in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

Suico’s Japanese manager Joe Koizumi admitted the need for the Filipino boxer to polish his skills before challenging either WBC ruler Sirimongkol Singmanassuk of Thailand or another Thai, World Boxing Association (WBA) king Yodsanan Nanthachai.

In the said fight versus Hutagalung, Koizumi said Suico still has to work on his defense after being caught several times by some wild hooks from the challenger during the first four rounds.

Koizumi disclosed that pursuing a title shot versus WBA super champion Acelino Freitas may be suicidal for Suico. The Japanese impresario admits that Freitas, an undefeated Brazilian knockout artist, may still be too strong for Suico to handle at this point of their respective careers.
