Mangubat Stakes WBC IN'TL Flyweight Crown

By Dennis Principe

20.11 - PARAÑAQUE CITY, Philippines - World Boxing Council (WBC) International Flyweight king Randy Mangubat of the Philippines tries to improve his chances of fighting for the regular world crown as he defends his title against old nemesis and compatriot Bert Cano tonight at the Casino Filipino Amphitheater in this city.

The 26-year old Mangubat, currenlty rated #7 in the WBC rankings, will be making his third defense of the title he won over Jong Kwan Kim last October 2000.

Mangubat is wary about the intention of Cano to avenge a TKO loss last February 2001. Mangubat, in his first defense of the international title, stopped the 27-year old Cano in the 4th round of their first title fight.

In the uncercard, Philippine superfeatherweight ruler Bobby Pacquiao makes a second defense of his title against ex-RP featherweight champion Baby Lorona, Jr.

Pacquiao, younger brother of world champion Manny, seized the Philippine title last June after scoring an 11th round TKO against Renato Inal. Three months later in Kidapawan, North Cotabato, Pacquiao defended the crown by stopping Al Deliguer in the 4th round.

On the other hand, Lorona is coming off an impressive 7th round TKO win against former RP lightweight titleholder Tirso Albia.

Last August 2001 in Miami, Florida, Lorona vied for the WBC Latin American featherweight belt but lost a 12-round decision to former WBC superbantamweight boss Hector Acero-Sanchez.

Meanwhile, former WBC flyweight champion Malcolm Tuñacao continued his quest for a second world title after scoring a 3rd round knockout win over Kazuyoshi Niki last Monday at the Kokura Izutsuya Pastel Hall in Kokura, Japan.

The 24-year old southpaw Tuñacao (14-1-2, 10 KO’s), now ranked #6 by the WBC in the superflyweight division, dropped the 21-year old Niki (9-2, 3 KO’s) once each in the first and second rounds.
