08.09 - Filipino-American sensation Nonito Flash Donaire Jr. captured the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific flyweight title by brutally stopping Thai veteran Kaichon Sor Vorapin in the second round last Sept. 1 at the University of Guam.
Donaire, a flashy former US amateur standout, took the title fight on short notice and relied on his lengthy amateur experience to overcome Vorapin who took his fourth loss in 17 bouts.
I was advised to think twice before accepting this fight because my opponent is a veteran and has never been knocked out. But I need to do something to get noticed by my countrymen and that inspired me a lot, said Donaire who now has five wins against a disputed loss.
From the onset, Donaire unleased rapid left and right combinations that shook the sturdy Vorapin. Another powerful combination in the second round sent Vorapin flat on the canvass. The Thai was counted out by referee Bruce McTavish.
The 19-year-old Donaire, who along with his brother Glenn, expressed his desire to bring honor to the Philippines. He plans to fight current Hawaiian sensation Brian Viloria, who, incidentally, is also of Filipino descent.
Were proud to be Filipinos and we want to be known as Filipinos as we fight. That is why we never forget to place a Philippine flag on our trunks, said Donaire.
Donaire believes his winning the WBO title will give him a much better chance of fighting Viloria who is currently the NABF and WBC Youth flyweight champion.
Obviously, Brian is afraid to face us because he knows our stuff. He was clearly beaten by my brother (Glenn) during the 2000 Olympic trials but the judges saw it otherwise. If he wants to face a worthy opponent then here I am Donaire declared.
Viloira is scheduled to fight on November and Donaire is hoping he will be considered for the said date even if it means fighting in Vilorias turf in Hawaii.
