SOLOMON HAUMONO SIGNS WITH DON KING!

By Tony Nobbs

19.08 - Undefeated Australian Heavyweight prospect Solomon Haumono (8-0, 8 ko) has signed a 3 year deal with promoter Don King. The 6'3 Haumono, a former National Rugby League star now trained by the highly regarded Charlie and Chris Gergan, leaves for the U.S shortly and is due to make his U.S debut next month. Haumona and the Gergans were invited by King to attend the John Ruiz-Kirk Johnson WBA Heavyweight Title fight in Las Vegas recently and the power punching 26 year old father of two was impressive enough in workouts to be given the biggest break in his short and sometimes stagnated career.

"Don King is excited to have Solo in his stable and we are due to get over there soon and fight on a September date which is being organised now. For his first fight he is getting three times as much as his biggest purse here and if he keeps winning, things are only going to get better for him. Already, John Ruiz has invited us into training camp with him to train and spar" said Chris Gergan, whose father Charlie is one of Australia's most successful trainers, having trained a slew of local and international stars including the likes of Tony Mundine Snr, Rudi Koopmans, Jesus Chong, Sammy Fuentes, Hector Lopez and Troy and Guy Waters in a globe trotting career dating back to the 1970's. Gergan Snr stayed in the U.S after the Ruiz-Johnson bout.

Haumono turned professional in July 2000 and had his first two fights on the undercard of childhood friend Anthony Mundine scoring devastating knockouts. After splitting with the Mundine camp the quietly spoken and gentlemanly "Solo Man" who is of Tongan heritage, had only two bouts last year before linking with the Gergan's and he has made considerable improvement this year while scoring four more knockouts. Haumono's father Maile was a former Australian Heavyweight Champion, also noted for his power who sparred with Smokin' Joe Frazier in 1975 before Joe's second knockout win over Jimmy Ellis in Melbourne. Maile scored a first round knockout of seasoned American Vernon McIntosh on the u/c of Frazier-Ellis II.
