LOVEMORE NDOU - CEZAR YARTE, FRIDAY NIGHT!

By Tony Nobbs

19.02 - IBF number 13 Super Lightweight contender Lovemore Ndou makes the first defence of the organizations regional Title against Cezar "The Czar" Yarte from the Philippines on Friday night at the Fraternity Club in Wollongong. This will be the first of five planed bouts in 2003 for the 31 year old South African born "Panther" who will not have new trainer Roy Alexander in the corner due to Alexander's commitments as match maker for the Taylor-Bargero card in Sydney.

Ndou has a bout with Mario Ramos (12-2-1, 2 KO) set for April 5 on a Goosen-Tutor Foxsport Net show in Mississippi but has learned from experience and is not taking anyting for granted. "Yarte is the number one Welterweight contender in his country and is coming in with a 19-4-1, record and he has thirteen knockouts" said Ndou (32-5-1, 20 KO) who won this belt by stopping Thai Saknurin Twins Gym in four rounds in Melbourne on November 29.

"This is an important fight for me, a win will move me higher in the Junior Welterweight rankings. I do not know much about Yarte but his record speaks for himself".

Ndou is studying for a combined degree in Bachelor of Law and communications this year and due to his university schedule intends to fight locally more in 2003 after having three outings in the U.S last year. "I love fighting at home and it s a chance for me to keep defending my IBF Pan Pacific Title which I am proud to hold. My university course also prevents me from traveling to Melbourne to train with Ray Giles. As a result, I am training with Roy Alexander in Sydney who is teaching me new tricks that are working perfectly in the gym. Roy and I have a good working relationship so far, and I have been getting a lot of good sparring with my new stablemate (Australian 154 lb Champ) Josh Clemshaw. Actually all the boys in Roy's gym are good to work with including the amateurs. Wade Clout in Wollongong has also been very helpful with sparring and I appreciate that. Unfortunately Roy can't be in my corner on Friday night, and so far we haven't made a final decision on who will replace him. I also thank the promoter of my fight with Yarte, Ross Clout (Wade's dad) for putting me on his show".

Wade Clout, rated # 6 in Australia at 140 lb also appears on the programme in a Welterweight eight rounder, taking on hard to match Queensland southpaw Matt Shaw, an occasional sparring partner of Ndou himself. Alexander, a former Nationally rated Middleweight in he 1980's steered Renato Cornett to a Title shot at IBF 135 lb Champion Paul Spadafora in December 1999, losing on cuts in eleven rounds. Three moths later, Ndou stopped Cornett in nine.

At different stages of his career since moving to Australia permanently in 1996, Lovemore has looked on the verge of challenging Lightweight Champions Stevie Johnstone and Spadafora while being promoted by now retired Bill Mordey. He is now managed by Melbourne businessman Stuart Duncan and has already called out England's current sensation Ricky Hatton. Victories over Yarte and Ramos (who has a decision win over veteran contender David Sample) he should be well positioned in the IBF top 10 where Kostya Tszyu is at the head of the class.

Ndou is always an easy interview and he concluded "There is talk that Kostya might have one more fight with Arturo Gatti and retire. If that happens I wanna be in a position where I can fight for the vacant world title. Otherwise, I can keep winning and lure Kostya into a fight. No disrespect to Kostya, he is a gentleman in and out of the ring. A true Champ, one could say, but I know I will be a better opponent than his last two opponents Ben Tackie and James Leija. In fact, if he came to fight in the same form he did against Leija, it will be an easy night for me".
