Australian Action: Roswell & McLeod Win!

By Tony Nobbs

18.05 - On a Jamie Myer promotion at the Brisbane Bronco's Leagues Club in Queensland on Thursday night WBA number seven Cruiserweight Daniel Rowsell retained his PABA Belt by knocking out Birbal Junior in two rounds and cleared the way for a defence against New Zealander Anthony Bigeni in
Indonesia next week.

The Johnny Lewis trained Rowsell elected to pick his punches in the first round and Birbal was having a good opening period until a sharp right hand dropped the 36 year old visitor from Nadi, Fiji, with ten seconds left. Daniel took command in the second and body shots took their toll on Birbal, a late sub for countryman Alifretti Misioka (5-2, 5 KO) who sank along the ropes after a vicious left rip to the side. Ref Derek Milham reached ten at the 1 min 17 mark.

Rowsell (86. 05 kg) moves to 22-2-1, 11 KO while Birbal (84.40kg) drops to 8-11-4, 2 KO. Crowd: 700.

Barring an upset against Bigeni, Sydney based Rowsell, 30, is set to fight unbeaten Algerian Olympian Mohammad (Ali) Azzaoui on a Myer promotion at the Seagulls RLFC in Tweed Heads, NSW on June 27.

Improving Jamie Guy stopped Chris Barrett in the first round of a Light Heavy contest. Guy is due to face Turkish amateur standout Ergument Aslan in Sydney next Friday night.

Raymond Lucas won a split decision over Jason Larsen in a Heavyweight six rounder. Lucas is trained by Brian Peden, father of Robbie and a rematch with Larsen, never in a dull fight is possible for nearby Stradbroke Island, Sunday May 25, on a show promoted by Peden Snr.

Queensland Jnr Welterweight Champion Ty Allen ( # 8 Aust) got a good workout in winning a unanimous verdict over Fijian trier Mohammad Jamaal Khan in an entertaining four rounder and Brian Fogarty, rated number three Jnr Middle in Queensland won a four round U.D over very gutsy Shane Winter. Fogarty and Winter are set for a return on the Brian Peden show.

At the Penrith Panthers Leagues Club in Sydney last night, Ian Mcleod (20-10-1, 4 KO) won a decision over Justin Clemshaw when a clash of heads resulted in both fighters suffering severe cuts in the third round. All three officials had Mcleod, a former Australian and PABA Middleweight Champion ahead by scores of 30-27, 29-27 and 29-28.

Former Aussie Jnr Middle Champ Clemshaw, who originally weighed in heavy for the bout, sees his record go to 18-11, 11 KO. In his last start, at this venue, Clemshaw lost a decision to Nader Hamden in a thriller for the IBF 154 lb Title which was up for grabs in this fight after Hamden's decision to campaign at 160 lb.

The Tech Decision was awarded to Mcleod under the rules of the NSW Boxing Authority. Interestingly, the IBF rules say that a fight must go into the fourth before it goes to the cards.

Undercard, Ian Scaeffer(#11 Aust Welter) KO 2 Mark Hipwell and Steve Ng KO 1 Peter Rudd. Two weeks ago Rudd upset # 9 Aussie Super Middle Brad Reid in three rounds in North Queensland.

The Penrith Panthers is fast becoming the premier boxing venue in Australia and will stage a Jeff Fenech promoted PPV card on June 2 featuring the Danny Green-Jason Delisle and Sam Soliman-Nader Hamden twelve rounders.
