The Beast v The Panther: Who Will Survive?

By Colin Nathan

03.05 - Former world jr featherweight champion, Vuyani "The Beast" Bungu will certainly have his last chance at boxing glory when he steps into the ring to fight South African featherweight champion Takalani "Panther" Ndlovu over ten rounds which is billed as an eliminator for the currently vacant IBO "world" featherweight title.

Bungu, who has not had a win on his record for over two years is desperately trying to turn back the clock and recapture some of the glory wich had him to be one the of the most successful South African boxers ever. At the age of 36, it is hard to see where he goes even if he should win this contest. In March of 2000 he was knocked, spark out in four rounds against Naseem Hamed, in what has to be his worst performance to date. He then made a comeback to the ring (2002) after being out for nearly two and a half years against another South African fighter and former IBF jr featherweight champion Lehlohonolo Ledwaba for the vacant WBU featherweight title and lost that points over 12 heats which was one of the best local fights seen here in a long time.

The signs in the Ledwaba fight were there for all to see: father time has caught up with the man many people call "The Beast". Many great fighters have one great fight left in them, could this be Bungu's last great fight? Bungu goes up against a man who is eleven years younger than himself and has nearly half the number of fights too.

Ndlovu, With a record of 20 wins (12 kos) and a single loss, is certainly the fresher of the two but at recent times of fighting he seems to be "wet around the ears". He won the South African featherweight title with a spectacular first round knock-out over then unbeaten Anthony Tshela. Since then he has done little to impress. In his last fight he had to go the distance in Germany, on the undercard of Corrie Sanders-Wladimir Klitschko, against Anthony Martinez over 8 rounds and looked rather boring in doing so.

Ndlovu punches really well to the body and puts his punches together really well, however at times he does appear to fall asleep. Prediction:A fight hard to call, but your scribe has to go with youth and vigor-"Panther"to win on points over ten rounds. The fight takes place on the 31 of May at Carnival City, In Brakpan, South Africa.
