Three months of excitement, My commercial for the heavyweight division

By Wes Moore

09.10 - The end of the year often brings little activity and a sense of closeout in the heavyweight division. This year is shaping up for a fine finish because as many as fifteen top caliber fighters are scheduled for action in the last three months of the calendar year. The schedule will most likely open up to offer several other top quality contests. It is an exciting time to be a boxing fan.

The month of October will serve up many spooky treats for heavyweight fans. Vaunted prospect Richel Hersisia will take on Chris Sirengo to kick off this weekend. Saturday is scheduled to give us an interesting clash for the European Heavyweight Title as new champion Przemyslaw Saleta clashes with Sinan Samil Sam. Former cruiserweight titleist Juan Carlos Gomez is supposed to continue his heavyweight campaign against the always-dangerous TBA. The weekend will close with a bang in the Deep South as Choctaw, Mississippi hosts a FOX Sportsnet card that features the co-headline of Elicier Castillo vs. Charles Shufford and Lance Whitaker versus Cliff Couser. The next weekend offers a slate of veterans and prospects as Joe Mesi gets his first big test versus David Izon. The Sugar Ray Leonard card, which boasts Mesi in his hometown of Buffalo, New York also, sees Lawrence Clay Bey against Ahmad Abdin. The action rolls on the next day as exciting Mexican prospect Javier Mora steps back in to face Chuck Wilson. The next day gives us the combo prospect punch of Malik Scott and Dominick Guinn to face undetermined opponents to close out the month.

We should have much to be thankful for in November as several world class heavies get back to work. A clash of prospects starts off the month as Cedric Boswell, fresh off his win over Melvin Foster, takes on Talmadge Griffis. Michael Grant is scheduled to continue his comeback on November 7. The actions gets back underway on the 9th as British pacesetter Danny Williams takes his first big step against South African Corrie Sanders. The month is closed out with a bout we should be thankful for: Vitali Klitschko vs. Larry Donald. Vitali, who is a mandatory for Lennox Lewis, takes a tune-up against "The Legend." It should be a decent measuring stick for the less heralded Klitschko brother as Donald is pretty slick for a heavyweight. It should be a good month.

The year closes out with only one big fight scheduled but it should be a nice gift. Wladimir Klitschko defends his crown versus the rising Jameel McCline. Two big, active, talented heavyweights in their prime should provide us with a decent fight. The month is ripe with possibilities as several intriguing matchups could materialize. We could see Tyson vs. Etienne, Moorer vs. Nielsen, Evander Holyfield vs. Chris Byrd, or Roy Jones Jr. vs. Ruiz. The most interesting heavyweight gift could come in the proposed return of embattled heavyweight. If just a couple of these matchups come to pass it would make for a great close to the year.

The heavyweight division is in dire need of quality fights and exciting prospects. The months of October, November, and December are shaping up to giving us a lot of both. It would be a nice finish to a great year in the division. You can reach me at largedog@bellsouth.net and until next time watch out for the upper cut behind the jab.
