Roy Jones Jr - The Art of Fighting without Fighting

23.10 - By Clinton Mollett: Rather than having to duck his opponents punches Roy simply ducks his opponents altogether. The 3-Time Divisional Champion talked about possible matches at Heavyweight with Buster Douglas and Evander Holyfield a few years ago only to back down in a hail of excuses to why he didn't follow through.

Fast forward to 2002 and Roy's still up to his old tricks, he's had Dariusz Michalczewski waiting in the wings for the past four years, hustled an arrogant Hopkins out of a rematch and got Vassily Jirov all excited when he flapped his tongue about moving up to 190.

Now the artful dodger is talking smack about fighting John Ruiz on March 1 for his WBA Heavyweight title but only if he gets a $10m guarantee and a 60/40 split of the pay-per-views in his favor, that does not sound like the demands of a man hungry to get a shot at a heavyweight title?....maybe that's because Roy has no intention of getting in the ring with Ruiz at all, which is why his offer was so one-sided.

Talk of a Jones Jr-Ruiz match up has been going on for the last few weeks with Jones Jr doing most of the talking (as usual) but when his ludicrous offer came to light, naturally everyone thought well that's the end of that, as soon as Ruiz tries to make an adjustment to the contract (and rightfully so) Jones will use it to weasel his way out of the fight altogether. Then there was an unexpected twist to the story which even Mr. Jones Jr couldn't have anticipated, Ruiz excepted the deal, the whole deal, and nothing but the deal with no adjustments made!

Well, that wasn't supposed to happen, was it Roy?

The 33 year old Undisputed Light-Heavyweight Champion is now left with a stupid look on his face after trying unsuccessfully for two weeks to find a way out of the fight gracefully through a technicality in the contract. It's been two weeks and still the contract is not signed, even though all his demands have been met, his own attorney Fred Levin couldn't get hold of him or even get his phone calls returned, in fact no one can get hold of Roy. Levin did say that it was the fairest first contract he'd ever seen from anybody, so Roy shouldn't have had any problems with it.

"It was amazingly fair", Levin said, "Everything Roy asked for he got".

My conclusion is....if Roy is in that ring on March 1 2003 at Thomas and Mack centre, I'll print this article out and eat it. If he beats Ruiz I'll throw it up and eat it again.
