"Touch of Sleep" to come face-to-face with "Baby Joe"

19.08 - A 3 PM press conference has been scheduled for this Tuesday at the Crunch Gym in downtown New York City. This will be the first face to face meeting between NABF heavyweight champion Joe Mesi and his opponent DaVarryl Williamson since they turned professional.

Mesi is looking forward to finally getting together with his former teammate from the 1996 U.S. Olympic team. Williamson was first expected to be in Buffalo on July 17. Both fighters were to endorse their contracts at a downtown press conference. However, Mesi granted a courtesy extension to Williamson and changed the press conference date to July 22.

When the new date came around, Mesi complied with the particulars of his contract by signing his agreement at the press conference. Once again, however, Williamson did not come to Buffalo. Mesi was later assured that Williamson had endorsed his contract

Mesi is optimistic that Williamson will show up at the New York press conference. New York City is located some 400 miles from Buffalo, a reasonably safe distance away.

Mesi, (26-0, 24 KO's) and Williamson, (18-1, 16 KO's) both earned backup spots on the 1996 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team. Mesi was the first alternate in the super heavyweight division. Williamson was the first alternate in the heavyweight division. They have been on a collision course with one another ever since.
