From Haïti, to Canada to international stardom: Joachim "Tijoa" Alcine

by Benoît Lelièvre

07.10 - Due to uncontrollable circumstances, i've been away from my writings since the Lucas Vs Sheika fight. I'm back...with a new canadian fighter to introduce to you. Well, he's not fully canadian, but canadian ground made him what he is today. I'm talking about the Haïti born fighter Joachim "Tijoa" Alcine.

After immigrating to Canada at the age of nine, he started to get interest in boxing approximatively around the age of twelve. Being raised by really strict and rigourous parents, Joachim never had the chance to get a taste of the sport until he was 16 years old. With the help of his friend Blaise Mayemba (who had been a pro boxer too). Maymeba brought Joachim at the Legends, under the supervision of Mike Moffa. Troughout his amateur career, Joachim got a record of 42-6 and got to a few international competitions, without making any noise.

On May 28th 1999, Joachim begun his pro career. It was on the undercard of Ouellet-Hilton II, one of the most famous boxing fights who ever been fought in Canada. Joachim had all the exposure to impress. He didn't ruined his chance, he knocked out Louis Bouchard in the first round. Bouchard was no threat, but Joachim handled him in a very impressive way. Due to the fact that he was relatively new in the pro business, Joachim had to wait five months to get another fight in the region of Montreal. He fought a well known chump in Quebec, a guy named Sylvain Hovington. Once again, "Tijoa" looked very impressive by knocking Hovington out in the second round.

The first significant fight in the career of Joachim Alcine came three weeks later on November 19 1999. Joachim came to Edmonton to challenge a local amateur star named Jason Naugler. It was pretty rugged in the beginning. For three rounds the two young wolves mixed it up in an exciting fight. At the fourth and last round, Joachim made Naugler see some stars when he nailed him with the left hook. Naugler staggerd around the ring, got in some clinches and finally survived the last round. Too late for Naugler, he lost his pro debut in front of his home town. Naugler never accepted this defeat. He asked for a rematch, but he would have to rebuild himself a record, Joachim, wisely adviced by Mike Moffa, was already somewhere else.

Than Joachim got his firsts locally televised fights. That has been the beginning of his growing popularity. He fought the Guinean fighters Leon Guilkes & Kenny Dalton in front of the whole province. Joachim looked slick, spectacular, fast and powerful. The two Guinean fighters suffered several knock downs before both being declared tko in the third round due to a spectacular streak of unanswered punches.

Almost a year after his pro debut, Joachim got rid of John Martinez, a boxing clown from Edmonton. Joachim gave a severe beating to some chump who was challenging his punching power. Today, we can still see Joachim delivering a left hook to Martinez temple to knock him out. Around this part of his career, Joachim splitted ways with Mike Moffa and his team and went to George Cherry stable, coached by Howard Grant.

Joachim won his second decision against Richard Lee Hall, a durable journeyman. He had great exposure on December 15 2000 when he fought Robbie Stowell in the undercard of Davey Hilton Vs Dingaan Thobela for the WBC Super Middleweight belt. As usual, another Alcine opponent found himself totally destroyed, overwhelmed with Joachim blazing speed and power. Three months later, he took out the highly combative Alex Lubo. Even if Lubo fought some world class opposition, he still tells anyone what Joachim is the best fighter that he ever fought. Again, Joachim found a place in another historic card on July 10 2001, in the undercard of Lucas-Catley 2, where Lucas caught his world title, Joachim put up a workmanlike performance, outboxing Wayne Harris, a former WBA middleweight contender, for six round for an unanimous decision.

Still using boxing instead of slugging, Joachim easily ko'ed Jose Aponte with some wise combo's in the undercard of Lucas-Thobela. Next February, Joachim beat to the points Christopher Henry in Hershey. May 25 2002...the televisual consecration for Joachim. He found a spot on Showtime's ShoBox:The Next Generation. He was to fight against Marcos Primera, a rugged south american fighter, for IBA america's belt. Joachim dominated the first 11 round with a brillant boxing. His accurate jab kept Primera away from trying anything. Primera made Joachim suffer a knockdown in the last round, but Joachim managed to survive and win the unanimous decision. The Haïtien wonder came back to the ring last September for the third time on a Lucas undercard where he tko'ed Brooke Wellby a finger up his nose to bring home the canadian super welterweights title.

Joachim might not have the greatest opposition, but he know what pressure is all about and he know how to deal with anyone in the ring. He's blowing in the neck of some top 20 in the welterweights...watch for him...he might surprise you!
