RESEDA, Calif. (March 31, 2003) - The Klitschko Brothers -- Wladimir and Vitali - have invited media and fans to join them at Madison Square Garden this Friday to watch the last night of the finals in the New York Daily News-sponsored Golden Gloves tournament.
"We are excited about going and watching these young men and women compete," said Wladimir, the 1996 Olympic Games gold medalist and former World Boxing Organization (WBO) heavyweight champion. "Both my brother and I had long careers in the amateurs so we know and appreciate how much work these boxers put in.''
Said Vitali, who is also a former WBO heavyweight titleholder: "The Golden Gloves is a great tournament because it gives young people an opportunity to do something in their lives. To win something as prestigious as this is quite noteworthy, but just taking part is special and something that you will never forget.''
The Klitschkos will be available for interviews and photographs during their brief stay in New York.
"We look forward to seeing our many fans and to talking to the press," Wladimir said. "I suspect the press may have a few questions for us and we will be happy to oblige them.''
Wladimir, of course, is awaiting word as to whether he will get an immediate rematch with Corrie Sanders, the South African who scored one of the biggest boxing upsets in years when he dethroned the younger of the Klitschkos in early March in Germany.
Vitali, meantime, is supposed to be next in line for heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, although he may step aside to allow Lewis to fight Mike Tyson again.
The brothers will be accompanied by Bernd Bonte of Sportfive, the Hamburg-based marketing and PR company for the Klitschkos.
