"Marvelous" Marvin Hagler To Return To Canastota For Hall Of Fame Weekend
Hall of Fame Weekend June 5-8th
CANASTOTA, NY - APRIL 2, 2003 - Former undisputed middleweight champion and 1993 Hall of Fame Inductee Marvelous Marvin Hagler will return to "Boxings Hometown" for the 14th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 5-8th.
Hagler captured the world middleweight title in 1980 with a 3rd round TKO over Alan Minter. Over the next seven years, he successfully defended the crown 12 times with wins over Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, John Mugabi and Mustafa Hamsho. Hagler lost the title on a split decision to fellow Hall of Famer Sugar Ray Leonard in 1987. Now an actor based in Italy, Hagler was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 1993.
"Its a tremendous honor for us to welcome Marvelous Marvin Hagler back to Canastota," said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. "Hes a boxing legend."
The Hall of Fame Weekend will feature over 20 exciting events. Living inductees to be honored include welterweight king Curtis Cokes, 2-time heavyweight champion George Foreman, junior welterweight champion Nicolino Locche, 3-division champion Mike McCallum, journalist Jack Fiske and author/screenwriter Budd Schulberg. Posthumous inductees will also be honored.
Over 50 boxing stars, including Emile Griffith, Ken Buchanan, Earnie Shavers, George Chuvalo, Angelo Dundee, Aaron Pryor, Alexis Arguello, Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, Tony DeMarco and Marlon Starling are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities.
