Marathon Boxing On March 15, Fourteen Bouts Planned For Fight Night In Chicago

07.03 - Fourteen action-packed fights are scheduled on a "Super-Sized" professional fight card promoted by Hitz Boxing Promotions and Art Pelullo/Banner Promotions on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in the UIC Pavilion located at 525 S. Racine Avenue in Chicago, Illinois.

Showtime, America's #1 boxing network, will be making their debut broadcast in Chicago, and for the first time in 20 years, Chicago will be the site of a world championship unification bout.

In the main event of the night, two titles are at stake, the 130-pound World Boxing Organization title and the World Boxing Association "unified" title, with current world champion Acelino "Popo" Freitas (32-0, 29 KOs), of Salvador, Brazil taking on challenger Juan Carlos "Ranchero" Ramirez (29-4, 12 KOs), of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The co-main event will feature undefeated cruiserweight prospects Michael Simms (12-0, 10 KOs) and Felix Cora Jr. (10-5, 5 KOs) in a ten round bout.

Promoter Bobby Hitz took advantage of the opportunity to schedule the finest boxing talent in the area on the undercard of the boxing event. The supporting bouts of the evening showcase no less than eight Chicago-based fighters with Angel "Torito" Hernandez (24-3, 15 KOs) leading the pack in an effort to return to his winning ways after losing a close fight to J.C. Candelo at the end of last year. Other Chicago fighters include Vinson Durham (21-27), Oscar Bravo (17-2, 14 KOs), Mike Mollo (9-0, 5 KOs), Ed "The Iron Man" Gutierrez (8-0, 6 KOs), Raul Fernandez (2-3), Matt "Bam Bam" Barber (2-0-1) and Art Binkoski (6-0, 5 KOs).

"Not only does Chicago have some of the best boxers in the USA, we have the best boxing fans anywhere. We are determined to give them the greatest boxing show Chicago has ever seen!" states Hitz.

A complete lineup of the supporting fights will be announced prior to the event.

Doors open at UIC at 4:00 p.m. with the first fight scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Tickets for the event, priced at $35, $50 and $150, are on sale now at the UIC Pavilion Box Office (purchase in person), or available to purchase by telephone or in person at all TicketMaster outlets, or buy online at www.ticketmaster.com.
