Herbie Hide signs with Hennessy Sports

- Next appearance April 16th against McCafferty – Targets showdowns with Harrison and Williams – Now training in Las Vegas with Mike McCallum and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad

07.04 - Hennessy Sports are delighted to announce that they have signed a long-term promotional deal with former two-times WBO heavyweight champion Herbie Hide.

The agreement brings together one of the most explosive domestic fighters in recent history with boxing’s most dynamic promotional company. The results will be there for everyone to see, courtesy of Hennessy Sports broadcasting deal with the BBC.

“This is going to be a very exciting time,” said Mick Hennessy, head of Hennessy Sports. “Herbie Hide is about to prove to the nation that he is still a genuine world-class talent and in the process he is happy to take on ANY British heavyweight.

“Herbie has suffered a few setbacks of late, but his move to Las Vegas has seen him change his life completely and he is certainly causing a stir on the other side of the pond.”

The 31-year-old decided to avoid distractions by relocating to America with just his close family after his shock defeat to Joseph Chingangu in September 2001, during which the Zambian hit him late after the referee had called for a break.

It is a defeat that the ‘Dancing Destroyer’ will put firmly behind him with the assistance of a sensational new training team that includes former three-weight world champion and ‘Hall of Famer’ Mike McCallum and former light-heavyweight world champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.

“Not only is Herbie now with a promoter who will let him flourish in his own right, but he also has two top trainers working with him,” added Hennessy.

“As trainers Mike McCallum and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad have begun to reach the heights they achieved as fighters and it is very significant that Herbie is a part of that.”

He continued: “Herbie has been telling me that despite all of his experience, he is learning new things every day in the gym. For instance Mike, as you would expect for a fighter who was called ‘The Body Snatcher,’ has got him throwing quality body punches more frequently.

“They have also tightened up his defence, his major weak point, and totally revised his style. He is apparently now so impressive in sparring that crowds are turning up to watch up his sessions everyday.

“He has even won the support of Mike Tyson’s long-term team member Steve ‘Crocodile’ Fitch. Steve is now his chief conditioner and motivator and has been so impressed with the way Herbie has been dealing with his sparring partners that he is declaring him as the ‘baddest man on the planet.’ It is going to be quite a road-show when they come to town!”

That date is fast approaching. Pending medicals, Hide, who has knocked out 31 of his 32 victims, will next fight on the April 16th Hennessy Sports ‘Big Time Showdowns’ promotion at the Nottingham Arena alongside British, Commonwealth and European middleweight champion Howard Eastman.

“You will see a new Herbie Hide on April 16th when he takes on Derek McCafferty over eight rounds,” continued Hennessy. “He will be looking to put in an explosive performance against a usually durable opponent and showcase all of his talents.

“He has always been a fantastic athlete with devastating power, hand speed and footwork, but all this is now complemented with a new array of punches, more composure and a better defence.

“The British public are now finally going to see a real heavyweight, with real talent – he has what it takes to breathe a bit of life and excitement into the division.

“I think the likes of Audley Harrison and Danny Williams are in for a shock and even though Herbie would love to take either of them on as he rebuilds towards a world title, I am not sure they will step up to the plate.

“It is easy to forget that Herbie is two years younger than Audley, despite the fact he has already won a British and two world titles. It is a frightening fact when you consider that the best is still yet to come!”

Big Time Showdowns takes place on April 16th at the Nottingham Arena. It also features British, Commonwealth and European middleweight champion Howard Eastman in a defence of his titles against Scott Dann and an all Nottingham showdown between Carl Froch, the hottest prospect in world boxing, and Michael Monaghan.
