Johnny Bumphus Returns Home to Tacoma

22.08 - August 29th, 2003, at the Emerald Queen Casino a local legend returns home. He's not defending his titles or preparing for another bout, this time it's in support of another fighter, his own. Johnny “Bump City” Bumphus grew up in Tacoma, Washington and attended Stadium high school. His career path took him to the ring where he proved himself to be a force to be dealt with. Bumphus took time out of his busy schedule to talk about what he’s looking forward to in coming home and what he’s been through to get here. He has not been home for the last six years and this is a happy homecoming.

With a professional record of 30-2-0, two U.S. titles and a WBA world title Bumphus defiantly made his mark in the boxing community. He also worked closely with internationally known boxing trainer Lou Duva. Unfortunately he had to retire due to health reasons, which led him to a life of drugs and addiction.

“I left here to turn my life around, and I was given the opportunity to do so” Bumphus says looking back on the life he used to live. “It really is a dream come true to be able to say that I’ve turned my life around and am now living a dream training boxers”. Bumphus has become a notable boxing trainer.

“I’m really excited to come home and see my friends and family. We are going to have a big celebration; I only wish that I could bring more of my boxers with me”.

The ESPN2 Battle at the Boat XXIII at the Emerald Queen casino will have one of Johnny’s fighters, James Lubwama. He’s set to fight Willie Stewart in the Semi-main event, “The Battle of the Undefeated”.
