KOTAI TO COMPLETE WBF DOUBLE FOR Fight Production?

HUNGARIAN TORNADO STORMS TOWARDS ‘WORLD’ TITLE

29.05 - Having successfully warmed-up with a clear and unanimous 6-round decision over decent Argentinian Oscar Daniel Veliz on May 16 in Den Haag, Holland, Hungarian “Tornado” Mihaly Kotai has his sights set firmly on winning the World Boxing Foundation (WBF) superwelterweight crown, which was vacated by Richard Williams.

Top-rated Kotai, the EBU’s No. 3 and No. 9 WBC contender, will get his chance to win his first ‘world’ title belt on June 21 in Manchester, England. Although an opponent has not yet been agreed by manager Olaf Schroeder, the 26-year-old undefeated Budapest native has already started training again and will be joined next week by his German trainer Theo Kerekesch in the Hungarian capital.

After lots of confusion at the start of Kotai’s career concerning the issue of his trainer, 66-year-old Kerekesch was tempted out of retirement earlier this year by Schroeder, who worked with the veteran while both were responsible for the careers of Luan Krasniqi and Firat Arslan. After having a careful look at Kotai and meetings with all concerned parties, Kerekesch decided to take up the task. “I’m doing this for two reasons only,” explains Kerekesch, “number one, I started to like Mihaly and believe in him as a fighter and number two, because of my relationship with Olaf.”. Their initial outing in April in London – a narrow 10-rounds decision over Darren Rhodes – left a lot to be desired in terms of technical improvements, but the pair took a step in the right direction with the recent success over Veliz.

Whether it will be enough to graduate to championship level is something Kotai, a former WBC International champion and possessor of a respectable 23-0 (11 KO’s) record, and Kerekesch will have to prove come June 21 and the WBF title shot. However, should the Hungarian succeed to clinch the belt, it would set a remarkable double, in the space of just five weeks, for his manager’s company Fight Production: In the main event of the Den Haag promotion featuring the Kotai vs Veliz match, Fight Production’s Dutch “Sonny Liston” Richel Hersisia became WBF ‘world’ heavyweight champion!
