SUCCESSFUL Fight Production DEBUT OF “COUGAR” HINTEREGGER

04.05 - In his first fight under the management of Olaf Schroeder’s Fight Production, International Austrian champion Gotthard ‘The Cougar’ Hinteregger impressed by easily blowing away Hungarian veteran Jozsef Mehes, a substitute, in two rounds in Berlin on April 30. The show was promoted by Eva Rolle’s International Fight Club Organisation at their gym with admission by invitation only. The colourful Hinteregger brought his record to 22-6-1 (12 KO’s) and even considering the ease of his win, proved a hit with the audience. While still under the Vienna Box-Team banner, Hinteregger last year lost a 12-rounder for the WBB middleweight title on an IFCO promotion and now Rolle proclaimed: “We will promote Gotthard to finally win this belt this year!”. To which the 35-year-old calmly replied: “First, get me a winner’s cigar now…”.

CAN MILAN KONECNY PERFORM A FOREMAN?

At the ripe old age – at least for a professional athlete – of 43, Czech never-say-die veteran Milan Konecny is to receive his first international title chance when he challenges for the vacant IBO Intercontinental cruiserweight crown next Saturday, May 10, in Gent, Belgium. Opposing him will be local favourite Ismael Abdoul, 18-2 (7) and seventeen years Konecny’s junior! However, the man from Usti is used to all kinds of disadvantages ever since he turned pro with German company Fight Production in 1993, already 34 years old. In compiling a record of 21-11-1 (11), Milan fought in almost a dozen different countries, always against younger opposition (some of them world class fighters no less), sometimes loosing, often times getting a hard deal from the judges…but more often than not coming away the upset winner. Having won himself Austrian and Czech pro titles, his own son Lukas is hot on his heels with German and Czech titles in his possession. Says trainer Jan Cejna: “As usual, Milan will be well prepared. He wouldn’t have lasted as long as he did without taking boxing dead serious. But when it comes to results or the time of his retirement, I have long stopped making predictions. Milan always comes up with the least expected…”.

HERCZEG RETURNS TO BE A WINNER AGAIN

IBF Intercontinental lightweight champion Laszlo Herczeg, who is co-managed by Unio Box Team and Fight Production, looks to return to the winning column after last month’s failed WBF world title challenge on May 14 in Szekszard, Hungary. The EBU # 9-rated Romano-Hungarian saw his record dip to 15-2 (7 KO’s) last time out when Londoner Ted Bami came from behind to overpowered him in nine rounds at the York Hall with the vacant WBF lightwelterweight crown at stake. Now he returns to his original weight division to appear against an opponent to be announced on George Racz’ show at the Unio Box Team gym. Meanwhile, co-manager Olaf Schroeder is negotiating for a defence of Herczeg’s IBF Intercontinental belt.
