Golden Boy vs. Yori Boy and other Predictions

by Jim "Boxadamus" De Pierro

03.05 - I can't believe people actually pay for this crap. I think every true hardcore boxing fan at some point purchases some ridiculous PPV that they know they shouldn't and when the cable bill comes through the first thought that goes to one's head is "What the hell was I thinking?!?!? I paid $50 for this and the fight was a total mismatch. I have seen better fights for free on Friday Night Fights." I will be the first to admit that I have spent money on PPVs I know I shouldn't have. Hell I even ordered the Holmes-Butterbean fight last year but this is one time I won't be suckered. I will be content to watch Oscar De La Hoya beat Yori Boy Campus to a pulp one week later on HBO.

Erik Morales 43-1 (32 KOs) vs. Fernando (Bobby Boy) Velardez 24-4-1 (6 KOs)

I have Velardes fight on a couple of occasions usually as an undercard fight and he is nothing special. A decent boxer but with very little pop to his punches as his 6 KOs is evidence of. I do have a vague recollection of the fight between Diego Morales (who I believe is Erik's cousin) and Velardez. D. Morales was kicking his ass as I recall and was only DQ'd because of the actions of his corner. Hispanic fighers tend to have a lot of pride and don't forget slights perpetrated against their families. Velardez really didn't do anything other than try his best to win but Morales is nevertheless going to make him pay. Bobby Boy is going down for the 10 count.

Erik Morales KO 5 over Bobby Boy Velardez

Oscar De La Hoya 35-2 (28 KOs) vs. Yory Boy Campus 80-5 (68 KOs)

This whole potion thing has got to be one of the most gimmicky things I have seen to build a fight that everyone knows is going to end up as a mismatch. Campus will do a little better than he is expected just because the level of expectations for Yory Boy is so low and the Golden Boys is so high but by no means will Campus even come close to beating ODLH. Campus is somewhat over the hill but he is not a completlely shot fighter like Kevin Kelley. The only upset coming out of this fight is that Campus will not quit and fight to the bitter end or until his corner throws in the towel. Yori Boy has a bit of a reputation as a quitter but against ODLH I think he will make a more concerted effort than he has in the past just because this the opportunity of a life time and he has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Oscar De La Hoya TKO 8 over Yory Boy Campus

* * * * Bonus Prediction * * * *

James "Lights Out" Toney will be ranked as a top 10 heavyweight by the IBF by the end of 2003.
