Gil Clancy Calls Budweiser's "Night of the Young Heavyweights" an Exceptional Show

25.09 - One of the most knowledgeable boxing authorities of our time is Gil Clancy. Clancy was the fitness guru, head trainer and battle strategist behind ring great Emile Griffith, who won 6 world titles with Gil at the helm. Clancy also trained Harold Weston, Jerry Quarry, George Foreman and Oscar De La Hoya, among others.

Teamed with sportscaster Tim Ryan, Clancy was an outstanding boxing analyst for CBS Sports. In fact, Ryan and Clancy rank with the best TV boxing broadcast teams ever.

Every June, Clancy attends induction ceremonies at the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York. Each year he is a featured speaker at the HOF's "Ringside Lecture" series, providing fight fans with thoughtful, detailed answers to their inquiries.

Clancy said he thinks that Budweiser's "Night of the Young Heavyweights" will be an exceptional show.

"I'm looking forward to the card," Clancy said. "Some new stars could emerge."

Clancy expressed particular interest in the main event between Joe Mesi and DaVarryl Williamson. "Mesi's a tough kid but he's really stepping up in competition now. This fight will be a big test for him. Williamson has a very good amateur background and you don't forget those skills."

On the Dominick Guinn/Duncan Dokiwari match: "Guinn scored that big victory over Michael Grant; if Guinn wins, he could be one of those new stars," Clancy said. "Dokiwari's a big, strong kid…he was impressive when I saw him."

On Juan Carlos Gomez: "Gomez has been around awhile and he can fight," Clancy said, "I'm concerned that no one will want to fight him; he's a very good technical fighter and he's a southpaw."
