Ashira Vs.Elliott: Who’s The King Of Africa?

27.08 - Press Release - Evans Ashira, 22-0 (12), will face fellow African Jerry Elliott, 37-2-1 (27), instead of Ukrainian Sergei Marchuk in the second defence of his WBA International middleweight title on September 6 in Erfurt, Germany. And the sudden change of opponent will surely mean a sterner test for the hard-punching Kenyan Don King-fighter.

27-year-old Elliott is a veteran of almost ten years in the prize ring, as he made his paid debut in January 1994 in his original hometown of Lagos, Nigeria. In 1997, after seven fights in Lagos, he moved to Germany, where he signed with Wilfried Sauerland, who is the promoter of the Ashira-bout in cooperation with DKP.

Elliott has twice won the WBC International title at middleweight, and once the IBF Intercontinental belt at super middleweight, and has delighted German crowds no less than thirty-one times. So the man they call “Alpenkönich” (German for: King of the Alps) will surely have the home crowd behind him, and maybe the judges as well!

“This fight between me and Elliott will be a war as long as it last! But given the reputation Germany has, I will be the boxer, the referee AND the judge! I am going to take matters in to my own hands, so a so called hometown decision will not work in this case” says a confident Ashira.

“I Am very well prepared, and have spared with Mads Larsen, Brian Barbosa, Martin Nielsen and Lolenga Mock. All of them are heavier guys than me, and they know what I can bring to the table”.

Ashira is ultimately looking for the biggest names in his division, but things being the way they are, he is very much willing to fight his way to a shot at the world title.

“This is like when a lion cant catch a Gazelle. It has to eat grass instead, and in this case I am the lion. A very hungry one! And the bottom line is, I really hope the bell rings and he shows up” says WBA & IBF # 6 Ashira, while underlining that he knows Elliott very well, and don’t underestimate him at all. “Jerry is a world class fighter, but so am I”!

This will truly be a fight to determine; who is the king of Africa, even though the fight is staged in Germany. And the winner could very well turn out to be the one who wants it the most. Ashira has no doubt who that person is:

“I am so hungry, and loosing is not even an option to me! Come September 6th, don’t blink if you are sitting at the ring side”.
