Cotto Hammers Perez

By Marc Abrams

19.04 - HBO World Championship Boxing this week comes from Fresno, California as Top Rank Boxing promoted a doubleheader showcasing 2 of its better fighters in rising prospect Miguel Cotto, and "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr.

In the opening contest Miguel Cotto, 14-0 with 10 knockouts, took on veteren Joel Perez. Perez, 34-5-2 (19 kos), is a game, tough fighter, who has fough Jesse Jame Leija twice and current Lightweight beltholder Paul Spadafora. Cotto came out throwing hard left hooks that were ringing off the head of Perez. Early in round 2, Perez began to bleed over his right eye. In round 3, Perez was trying to make a competitive fight, but was simply overmatched, as Cotto continued to land vicious head assaults. Cotto began hurting Perez with jabs dropping him with a awesome body shot and the fight was stopped at 1:29 of round 4. Cotto upped his record to 15-0 with 11 knockouts and looks like a star of the future.

In the maine event "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr. was defending his WBC lightweight belt against Victoriano Sosa. Mayweather, another undefeated fighter 29-0 (21 knockouts) was taking on Sosa who was making his 2nd attempt at a world title, as he had IBF beltholder Paul Spadafora on the canvas and then ran out of gas in losing as 12 round decision.

The fight began with some good back and forth action with Mayweather winning the 1st 4 rounds very narrowly. In round 5, Sosa began to land some power shots on Floyd, although not cruhsing blows, I believe sosa did win round 5 and 6 because of the amount of work he was doing and the lack of punches thrown by Mayweather. In rounds 7 and 8 Mayweather started to dominate again, using his jab, and doin a great job of countering Sosa. When the final scores were announced, to no ones suprise, Mayweather pounded out an easy 12 round uninanimous decision by the scores of 118-110, 118-110 and 119-109. After the fight Maywether said he wood like to fight the winner of the upcoming unification bout May 17 between IBF champ Spadafora and WBA chamo Leo Dorin.
