11.01 - An outstanding night of boxing was enjoyed by most at the stunning Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The live airing of ESPN2 Friday Night Fights was headlined by an exciting heavyweight contest between Davarryl Williamson and Robert Wiggins and the co-feature was a NABF title fight with Alejandro Moreno challenging the champion Brian Viloria.

Davarryl Williamson vs Robbert Wiggins- 10 Round Heavyweight Main Event

This was one hell of a fight with both men giving and receiving hard blows through most of the bout. The first two rounds showed Wiggins aggressively attempting to get inside but accomplishing little; and Williamson was content to circle and jab. Round three saw things heat up with Wiggins getting decked by a sharp Williamson right cross. The rest of the round was a frail-fest with neither man accomplishing much. Rounds four and five saw Wiggins mount a comeback against a winded Williamson until Davarryl began to time some strong counter uppercuts in rounds six and seven. Round eight broke the scoring open as Williamson again dropped Wiggins and then Wiggins was docked a point by esteemed referee Michael Ortega for holding as he was attempting to fend off the barrage of arm punches. The last two rounds were the product of fatigue and Williamson went on to a unanimous decision. The judges had it 94-93, 97-90, and 96-91. EastsideBoxing scored it 96-91. Williamson moves to 18-1 and Wiggins falls to 17-2-1. Amazing effort by both men in this matchup.

Yuri Foreman vs Andrey Trunov- 6 Round Junior Middleweight

Yuri Foreman again proved a worthy prospect by outclassing game trial horse Andrey Trunov over six rounds in second to last bout of the evening. Foreman showed great lateral ring movement in both directions and admitted after the fight that he felt he moved a little too much. He has a very good stance and posture, tucked in chin and great mobility with his hands and feet. He worked well behind his jab in the first two rounds and used excellent body work and right hands through the middle of the fight to wear Trunov down. All three Judges and EastsideBoxing had the fight 60-54 for the young Brooklyn, New York Prospect. After the fight Foreman said he would like to be more active and move up to 8 round matches. He looked very confident, comfortable and well prepared by superb trainer Tommy Brooks. Foreman improves to 7-0 and Trunov falls to 8-5.

Brian Viloria vs Alejandro Moreno- NABF Flyweight Title

A very tactical and one sided fight as former Olympian Brian Viloria spent most of the night on cruise control as he led tough Alejandro Moreno around by his leash. Viloria continues to get in good work and he added twelve more hard rounds to his resume tonight. He started off the fight with crisp uppercuts and hard left hand counters against the slower Moreno. Moreno was game and very tough during the whole fight and has a great chin. Throughout the fight, Viloria's must better amateur pedigree and all around skill advantage was displayed and Moreno simply did not have the goods to keep up with the tireless Viloria. In round ten, the two had a nice exchange for the only real action of the contest. The ringside judges had the bout 119-109, 120-108, and 118-110. EastsideBoxing scored the bout 118-110. Brian Viloria keeps his title and moves to 11-0, and Moreno falls to 19-11-1. After the fight, Viloria said he may have hurt his right hand and "maybe" there is a fight with Eric Morel in the future.

Undercard Results

In the opening bout of the evening, young heavyweight Malcolm Tann improved to 3-0 with a lopsided 40-35 unanimous decision victory on all cards (including Eastside's) over very tough Harold Rodriguez. The four round event was filled mainly with rough house Rodriguez tactics such as low blows and holding and hitting. Rodriguez was docked a point in round two for low blows. Tann hit him with everything he had and Rodriguez kept telling him to bring more. A pretty entertaining opener. Rodriguez fell to 3-2.

The second and third fights were quick knockout wins for the showcased talents. Teddy Atlas-trained Elvir Muriqi improved to 25-1 picking up his 15th KO victory with a crushing straight right hand in round one over Mike Coker. The end came at 1:59 and was the second knockdown of the round. Coker falls to 9-8-1. The other undercard matchup saw Sechew Powell, now 5-0 with 3 KO's, knockout quick Billy Joe Tipton early in round two. Tipton was dropped with an overhand right, and then was decked two more times before the fight was waved off. Tipton fell to 1-3.

This was a wonderful night of boxing and I would like to give special thanks to Mohegan Sun Casino for taking excellent care of the press as well as Dibella Entertainment who provided great access to themselves as well as the fighters after the matches.
