Boxing
Miranda Too Much For Green

By Roland Flores: On Saturday night, Edison Miranda (28-1, 24 KO's), possibly the hardest puncher in the middleweight boxing division since Julian Jackson, won a 10-round unanimous decision over Allan Green, a previously undefeated, and similarly hard punching middleweight, in what may have been one of the most anticipated fights so far in 2007, at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente, San Juan, in Puerto Rico..

Before the bout started, it was clearly evident that both fighters appeared to have have a general dislike for each other, fueled by the scornful comments that they rained on each other all week long. One odd thing struck me, as I listed to the fans, I couldn't help notice that they were on the side of Miranda, a fighter who just recently moved to Puerto Rico, after having lived his life in Columbia, and they also had a dislike for Green.

In the 1st round: both fighters started off boxing and using the Jab. However, seconds into the fight, Miranda landed a big right hand that both stunned and shocked Green, who before that seemed a little more courageous. After that punch, Green appeared to have little interest in getting close enough for Miranda to tag him again. Instead, electing to jab, mostly ineffectively, at Miranda. In return, Miranda threw jabs of his own, mixed with a couple of choice right hands, thrown with huge looping arcs. Miranda wins round by 10-9.

Round two: Begins and both fighters start off using the jab, with Green landing the majority. Miranda then threw a flurry of punches, a few were low and Miranda was warned by the referee. Towards the end of the round, Miranda lands a huge right hand to the head of Green, followed by an excellent body shot, that looked painful. Green starts to box, back pedaling to avoid Miranda. Green seemed to win the boxing part of the round, despite getting hit with some horrendous shots by Miranda. However, Miranda outlanded him overall, and easily won the round 10-9.

Round 3: They once again begin the round using the jab. Green lands a good combination of punches. Green begins to complain to the ref about a foul, Miranda takes advantage of this and runs at him, landing a big shot to Green's head, with his mouth open in mid-complaint. However, the referee wants nothing of Green's complaints, and chooses to ignore him with a blank stare. Green throws a good body shot then Miranda lands a combination and stuns him. Green turns again, and starts complaining to the referee, and once again, Miranda two more right hands to Green's exposed head, in mid yap. Needless to say, Miranda is the aggressor in this round and therefore wins it. 10-9.

Round 4: They are are fighting tactical in the middle of the ring. Green then lands a beautiful left hook, easily the hardest punch of the fight, which Miranda takes it well, despite his head being violently snapped back from the shot. Miranda grins back, starting to taunt Green. As if angered, Miranda throws two very hard right hands that land to the side of Green's head. Sensing that Miranda means business, Green starts backing away again, like in the earlier rounds, throwing jabs to keep Miranda away. They both begin to clinch. Actually, it's Green that is initiating the clinches, using a kind of jump clinch, something I've never seen before in boxing. When Miranda gets close, Green jumps forward like a knife and wraps Miranda up in a death clinch, to avoid being hit by him. The last 20 seconds of the round, Miranda lands a big right hang and slightly stuns Green. Miranda wins this round. 10-9.

Round 5: They fight in the middle of the ring. Miranda is using the jab more. Green throws a body shot and Miranda starts to taunt him. Miranda lands a big right hand. At this point of the fight, all of Miranda’s right hand shots seem to land without any problems. However, Green lands another huge left hook, catching Miranda as he's coming forward. Miranda answers back with two successive huge right hand shots that send Green backwards. Miranda wins this round 10-9.

Round 6: Miranda starts off throwing the jab. Green at this point is being outboxed, something that wasn't expected going into the fight, since he was the one who was considered the better boxer of the two. The crowd was becoming bored. Green is also fighting scared, jumping into clinches with Miranda from one feet away. Clearly, Green is on the defensive in this round, seemingly petrified from tasting right hands in previous rounds. Miranda is warned for hitting low. Miranda wins this round 10-9.

Round 7: They start off jabbing. Green is throwing more but they aren't landing. Both are tactical, and start clinching. Miranda begins to box, and taunts at the end of the round. Miranda won this round 10-9.

Round 8: Begins with both holding and hitting. Then suddenly, Green then knocks down Miranda with a devastating left hook, a punch that was thrown with a lot of power and speed, and Miranda never saw it coming until it was too late. Miranda immediately gets up from the knockdown, looking both angry and embarrassed. However, Green, sensing that he has Miranda hurt, lands a big right hand. Then they both begin to throw the jab. Green lands another left hook, and they clinch. Green wins this round 10-9.

Round 9: at the start of the round, both start jabbing in the middle of the ring, with Green landing the majority of the shots. Miranda then stuns Green with a big right, a punch that echo's in the auditorium, and follows with a left, right combination, almost as equally as hard. Green tries to jab, in self defense, but he looks hurt and scared. Miranda then throws a left hook. Both start to box and clinch. With seconds left in the round, Miranda stuns Green with a small left hook that wobbles him. Miranda wins this 10-9.

Round 10: The final round begins tactically. However, as they move back against the ropes, Miranda lands a big right hand, followed by a left, right combination, which stuns Green, who immediately grabs Miranda in a clinch. Miranda becomes eager to get a knockout, lands a combination on the ropes and a huge right hand and down goes Green. However, he makes the count - barely - but has no legs and instead of walking forward as the referee summons him, he walks backwards into the ropes. Miranda lands another right hand, Green goes down again, but makes the count and has no legs what so ever. Miranda lands a big right at the bell and the fight ends. Miranda, of course, wins this round and the fight on my card 10-8.

Although Miranda did get the decision. The fight was not what the fans thought, mainly because most people believed it to be a possible fight of the year. Instead, it was more like target practice for the power-punching Miranda, who was forced to chase Green around the right all night, despite Green's impressive credentials going into the fight. However, it appeared that Miranda's awesome power had the most to due with Green's cautiousness, forcing him into a survival mode as early as the 2nd round, for fear of being knocked out. Miranda, who improves his record to 28-1, now will search for a possible title fight with one of the current champions, possibly against Arthur Abraham, with whom he lost a very controversial decision to in September 2006, in Germany

Miranda Decisions Green

By Jim McManus: Edison Miranda, (28-1, 24 KO’s), dominated a mostly reluctant Allan Green (23-1, 16 KO’s) tonight, knocking him down twice in the 10th round, en route to a 10-round unanimous decision at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Miranda controlled the action in the first half of the fight, constantly pursuing Green, who spent much of the time either running or jabbing defensively. On occasion, Miranda would trap Green and land huge shots, which made Green all the more determined to continue running, possibly afraid of getting stopped if he were to try and trade punches with Miranda. However, in the eighth round, Green suddenly stopped running and surprised Miranda with a huge left hand that knocked Miranda down..

The punch did little to stop Miranda's momentum, though, as he once again continued tagging Green with huge punches, hurting him in the 9th round with a big right hand. In the 10th round, Miranda went all out, storming after Green and landing monstrous shots that send Green down twice and badly hurting him. However, Green was able to make it to the end of the fight, barely, all the while taking tremendous punishment. The final scores were: 97-90, 96-91, 96-91.

If the fight had gone another 10-30 seconds, the referee would have likely have stopped the fight due to the punishment Miranda was inflicting on Green, who was unable to protect himself. All in all, it was painful to watch for the most part because of Green's constant running. In fact, if it wasn't for Miranda, there would have been no fight, since he was doing all the work. At some point, Green needed to make a stand and decide to fight, but it seems each time he tried, he would get hit with a big right from Miranda that would shake his confidence.
