Prediction for WBA welterweight title fight on Showtime this weekend

by Jim De Pierro

27.03 - Andrew "6 Heads" Lewis (21-0-1 19KO's) as a fighter has yet to impress me in the few times that I have seen him. James Page (25-3 with 19 KO's and linear WBA welterweight champion at the time) looked so woefully unprepared and amateurish against Lewis that I almost think he was drunk. Apparently Page forgot everything he learned about boxing in the 19 months of inactivity prior to his fight with 'Six Heads' Lewis. 'Six Heads' does have at least one redeeming quality in that he is very heavy handed, perhaps even more so than Shane Mosley or Vernon Forrest.

While Larry Marks is certainly a competent fighter Lewis's performance in that bout certainly wouldn't lead anyone to think that he was clearly the best welterweight in the world. Marks had Lewis in serious trouble in the first round. Had Lewis been in there with Mosley or Forrest he would not have made it to the second round. Lewis to his credit though went on to win a unanimous decision against Marks who has never been knocked out.

I have to admit I didn't see the first fight because it was the undercard bout of Roy Jones jr. vs Julio Gonzales and if all my years of being a boxing fan have taught me anything it is not to waste money on watching Roy fight guys he has almost no chance of losing to. Ricardo Mayorga (23-3-1 21 KO's) from all accounts gave Lewis all he could handle in the two rounds of their last bout in July of 2001. The first fight was ruled a no contest after an accidental clash of heads in which Lewis was ruled unable to continue. In an interview with Rick Scharmberg published on March 25th Lewis stated his intention to box more this time. Given the trash talk between Mayorga and Lewis camps at the press conference and the rough style of first fight its not to likely this one will go the distance. Interestingly the only other fight against a name opponent for Mayorga was another 2nd round inconclusive result against Diobelys Hurtado which ended in a technical draw. Look for 'Six Head' to win in 6.
