Paolo Roberto wins "Battle of the Baltic"

By Denzel Ivarsson

16.11 - A Modern Sports & Events promotion held in Mariehamn, Finland Saturday night billed as "the Battle of Baltic" saw 33-year-old former WBC/WBO title challenger, Paolo Roberto (28-3-1) out pointing Raul Eduardo Bejarano, (23-6-2) of Argentina to secure the WBC international welterweight title.

Roberto, fighting out of Stockholm Sweden, had the South American down twice in the opening round but failed to follow up and missed an obvious opportunity to walk away with an early stoppage victory. Bejarano proved to be a tough character and stayed in there! He gave the Swede all sorts of trouble and had Roberto rocked in the tenth round after landing a beautiful right hand. Roberto wobbled badly but showed incredible grit, survived the onslaught, shook it off, and came back with a furious attack in the the later stages of the match to win the fight unanimously on all three judges scorecards.

It was an interesting card of boxing and several of the finest young Scandinavian Boxers were there to display their skills. Probably the best prospect in Danish pro-boxing of today, Junior middleweight Ahmed Kaddour, handled Alban Mothie of France quite easily to rack home his 13th straight victory (6KO) via a comfortable six round decision.

Swedish brawler Milan Mircovic, previously unbeaten in 9 outings with all of them coming by knockout, had to travel the full route with Spaniard Antonio Postigo in an exciting fight at middleweight. Exciting was also the word for the bout between Thomas Jansson (lightweight) and Aneruy Cuevas Pena of the Dominican Republic. The Spanish-based Dominican was odd to look at, showed great hand-speed but seemed to walk into everything Jansson had to offer. Fortunately for Pena, Jansson is not the greatest puncher in the world! The Swede had him down for the count in the second but got to "taste " the canvas himself in the round to follow. Jansson's skills were superior in all departments and wisely enough, Pena did not come out for the seventh round.

A strong looking debutant in the shape of Middleweigh Youssef El Awad lightened Up the card. The former amateur champion stopped Frenchman Ludovic Pitiot after 2:57 of the first round to start of his career.

Norwegians Terje Arildsen (middleweight) and Reidar Walstad (bantamweight) both scored fourth round victories. Walstad's opponent Anton Kubou of the Czech Republic was literally tortured over the four round distance and how he managed to stay on his feet was more or less incredible. Arildsen had a tougher time with his opponent, Colombian Jose Warner, but countered well and left the ring a clear points winner.

Swedish welterweight, Isam Kahlil fresh of a training period in the USA together With Paolo Roberto and Ahmed Kaddour was handed a durable Romanian by The name of Vasile Surcica and had to go the full six to win his match.

Featherweight sensation Samuel Kebede didn't disappoint his fans as he "played" With Tunisian Imed Benkalifa over six round to sneak home his 18th pro-win.

It was a well-organized card that Modern Sports & Events brought to the fans Just a few miles from the Swedish border were Pro-boxing shamefully still is Banned. The ring-card girls were brought in from the ongoing beauty-pageant, Miss Sweden, and the ring-announcer work was professionally conducted by TV3 Journalist Robert Aschberg. More shows of this kind and MSE will put up a serious fight with rival Team Palle!
