Shawn Porter: Keith Thurman Fight on the Horizon

Former IBF welterweight champion”Showtime” Shawn Porter, who fans last saw getting the measure of Ohioan rival Adrien Broner in June, is getting ready for his planned (September) ring return against ‘whomever’ is put in front of him, although has conceded he will put the date back if old amateur friend and rival Keith Thurman is the man up next.

Thurman boxed New Yorker Luis Collazo in his Tampa backyard last month in a performance that was more criticised than praised, and thus “One Time” has signalled a desire to sign off 2015 with a big fight.

The two Al Haymon managed welterweights would surely make for an explosive clash, with the only immediate worry being the financial dynamics of such a big fight being on “free TV”in the US, without the PPV revenue. One of the main reasons PBC puts on so many mismatches is they’re cheaper to stage, however that’s something for Haymon and his various affiliates to figure out.

Speaking to ‘thaboxingvoice’ Porter was acutely aware of the business dynamics behind the fight;

“Everyone wants to see Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman get it on. For me, in my opinion, I think that’s one of the biggest fights out there. If it happens this year, it happens. If it doesn’t until January then we’ll be ready in January. My job is to be prepared and get the job done, whoever this is.”

“Prior to PBC I always thought that’d (Thurman) be a PPV fight. Aside from Mayweather, probably the biggest fight of my career. I still think that it can be. Obviously what with PBC doing big things now on network television, which is very cool, (but) if the money’s right and the timings right, we’ll make that fight.

“Keith has no problem with that, I have no problem with that, it’s just all about boxing, doing the business (side)”

“If that’s the best fight for us for money and timing, that’s what works for us and I follow my Dad’s lead,” he added.
