Shakur Stevenson loses out on Olympic gold – but he can still become “The next Floyd Mayweather!”

Ultra-talented bantamweight Shakur Stevenson, one of the best boxers to have represented America in the Olympics for a number of years, lost out on a gold medal in Rio – dropping a close split decision to Cuban Robeisy Ramirez. Scores were 29-28 twice for Ramirez, now a two-time Olympic gold winner, and the same score on the third card for the 19-year-old.

Stevenson, who had caught the eye of the great Floyd Mayweather Junior, can now look ahead to a glittering pro career. Mayweather has apparently signed Stevenson – even going as far, this week, to call the gifted boxer “The next Floyd Mayweather” – and as part of the ever-growing Money Team, the man from Newark, New Jersey is fully expected to now go on and capture professional gold.

Stevenson was in tears after losing the decision to Ramirez – a points verdict against him he had no arguments with – but his poise, his class and his amazing skill during Rio 2016 impressed many, with not only Mayweather but also Andre Ward Tweeting their approval over the teenager’s ability and control.

So, as we look towards 2017, Stevenson – who said after the loss to the Cuban star that he does not like, and is not used to, losing – can be expected to be a major attraction in even his early pro bouts. With Mayweather’s powerful backing, Stevenson will likely appear on some major cards as he builds up experience as a pro. With his amazing talent, Stevenson is also likely to be moved fast. Mayweather said of the silver medal winner: “If anybody can break my records, this young kid right here can do it. I truly believe in him.”

So, no real pressure then!

Stevenson has not yet announced his deal with Mayweather, and we can only guess how much money “Money” has offered him, but there look to be exciting times ahead for Stevenson, for his ever growing number of fans, and for Mayweather himself.
