Quillin sees Golovkin fight as not worth the risk

If you were hoping to see former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) face WBA 160 pound champion Gennady Golovkin in the near future, you might want to forget about it. Quillin, 31, said that Golovkin is too high of a risk without much of a reward right now because the money isn’t there.

Quillin wants to fight guys that bring him good money, and in the case of Golovkin it wouldn’t bring the kind of money that it might later on. Quillin acknowledges that Golovkin has a big name right now, but he thinks that his name doesn’t bring the big money yet.

Quillin isn’t ruling out a fight against Golovkin in the future, but that obviously is something that will remain up in the air until Golovkin becomes a big money fighter.

“Gennady Golovkin is kind of like the bogeyman,” Quillin said via IFL TV. “His name is there, but the money and business behind him is not equaling up to each other. Gennady Golovkin is looking for a payday too. The name doesn’t really bring much to the table besides a high risk fight with a low reward. Just saying to a bunch of fans ‘I beat Gennady Golovkin.” That’s all it really does. I’m not thinking like that. I’m not thinking of beating this guy because of the fans. The fans only do so much for you.”

You can’t blame Quillin for not wanting to fight someone who doesn’t bring much to the table. Fighting Golovkin is a whole lot of risk, and it’s not really worth it unless Quillin is going to make a massive payday. Golovkin hasn’t reached the point where he’s a pay-per-view fighter, and there remains questions whether he’ll ever get to that point.

If he does, then you can expect Quillin to look to get a fight against him pronto. But if Golovkin fails to become a pay-per-view fighter and stays pretty much where he’s at right now, then Quillin is better off fighting other champions and looking to get the biggest fights possible against the likes of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Golovkin needs a big name like Cotto to get him to the point where he becomes a pay-per-view attraction, but there’s a lot of ifs involved with him getting that fight. Even if Golovkin does beat Cotto, he may still fail to become a pay-per-view fighter because a lot of fans may not want to pay to see him fight, especially with the limited talent in the middleweight division. There’s really only a small handful of fighters that Golovkin can fight anyway at 160, so it’s not as if fans are going to pay big money to see him annihilate the likes of Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Hassan N’Dam or Andy Lee.
