Price to discuss with his promoter whether to face Thompson again

By Michael Collins: Getting knocked out was no doubt a horrible experience for the previously unbeaten heavyweight contender from Britain David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s), and he’s not ready to say whether he’ll attempt to avenge his 2nd round knockout loss at the hands of Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) or not as this time.

Price wants to talk things over with his promoter Frank Maloney to decide whether a rematch is the best thing for him to do.

Price said at the post-fight press conference “Of course when someone beats you, you want to get it right. We’ll have a chat next week to see what’s happening. We’ll decide what’s best moving forward.”

Judging by the fact that neither Maloney nor Price were chomping at the bit at the thought of facing the 6’5” Thompson again, I would have to say that the chances of a Price-Thompson rematch occurring are slim and none.

At this point even if they wanted the fight, I still don’t think it would happen unless Maloney is willing to make Thompson a much bigger offer than the one he received for last Saturday’s fight because Thompson has already said there’s no way he’ll fight Price again unless he’s given a lot more money.

The fight that Thompson wants is against Tyson Fury, and I’m sure Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessey will be looking to make sure Thompson doesn’t slip away from him because it’s now a marketable fight in the UK after Thompson’s win over Price.

Fury was talking about wanting to fight unbeaten Kubrat Pulev for the IBF mandatory spot to face champion Wladimir Klitschko, but the Thompson fight will give Fury a nice payday and get him a lot of attention worldwide. That’s the bigger fight now for Fury, and he has to do is get past Steve Cunningham on April 20th in New York, and then he’ll be ready to face Thompson.
