Paul Smith Undecided Over Future After Ward Defeat

Three weeks ago fans witnessed Britain’s Paul Smith getting bloodied and soundly beaten by the returning Andre Ward in California, turning in a valiant effort despite being thoroughly outclassed by one of the world’s best fighters from the opening bell in their catch-weight contest.

It was Smith’s 3rd loss in as many fights, and 6th overall, following back-to-back world title challenges to Germany’s Arthur Abraham, fights that saw Smith come up short on points both times.

Following the defeat to Ward it was expected that Smith would retire and focus on his television punditry duties with Sky TV, yet the Liverpool fighter is seemingly refusing to rule anything out just yet, ostensibly hinting that he may box on once more.

Smith, who spoke to Sky Sports, admits he hasn’t yet had the time to think about his future for long enough to make a concrete decision.

“I honestly don’t know what I am doing. It was only 3 weeks ago that I fought the best fighter in the division, so I am just taking a rest. And I need a good rest with my family.”

“My missus is due a baby in 6 weeks time and there are loads of things to do around the house, so I just haven’t got the time to sit and think about it.”

“It’s nice that people keep asking me but I haven’t even come close to making a decision yet.”

It’s incredibly difficult to see what could possibly be left for Smith, especially at world level. There is a new crop of 168 lb fighters emerging in Britain, including Smith’s own brother Callum, and one struggles to see what could await Smith domestically either in terms of relevant fights.

Following the Ward loss, his trainer Joe Gallagher spoke out to advise retirement.
