Mayweather: Sympathetic Words For Adrien Broner

(Photo credit: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions) There were hundreds of thousands of boxing fans the world over rejoicing on Saturday night when “Little Bro” Adrien Broner came up short against Shawn Porter in Las Vegas – with consensus opinion being the abrasive motor mouth didn’t get anything that he didn’t deserve – especially given his classless antics at the final presser – that included insulting his opponents father/trainer, Kenny Porter.

In terms of the fight, it was a case of too little, too late from Broner, who appeared to come alive right at the end of the clash – even scoring a late knockdown – and his much maligned attitude was summed up with an Instagram post directly after the fight that informed the world that he was off out – ostensibly to hit the clubs and get pi****.

Good riddance.

However, following the bout, fighthype.com caught up with “Big Bro” Floyd Mayweather – and “Money” had a few sympathetic words for his protégé – something I think “AB” may find hard to come by from many other quarters.

Floyd said

;

“Things happen. You live and you learn. I still love him the same. I love these fighters. I only want the best for them, it’s all about them winning, it’s all about the talent winning when it’s all said and done.”

The talent was obviously with Porter if Floyd’s logic is anything to go by! Asked what went wrong for Broner or what he could have done better, Mayweather said;

“I think Adrien shoulda tried to establish his jab, then he shoulda went to the body – but the best man won tonight and I can’t take nothing from Shawn Porter. He went out there and done what he had to do.”

“Adrien Broner I love you. Shawn Porter, congratulations to you and Team Porter – you did what you had to do tonight and all I can do is take my hat off to you.”

A rare touch of class from Floyd. Maybe Adrien should follow suit?

As I’m not sure what’s left for him right now. He needs to drop out of the welterweight division – I think we know that much.

Yet for a man once considered Floyd’s heir apparent it is a hard, hard fall from grace. Struggling with Malignaggi, getting battered all over by Marcos Maidana and now this – do we have to endure another 3 unremarkable fights like Emmanuel Taylor, Molina Jr etc in order to watch him rebuild?

God I hope not.

My wish?

Send him in with Ruslan Provodnikov or Lucas Matthysse at 140 and pack him off into retirement for good.

Yeah, I like the sound of that.
